Default Nav question

How is it that a non nav C7 can still get a navigation map through onstar. I would think if this is the case a navigation program could be installed at a later time or downloaded via wifi. Any one care to enlighten me?

When you find out please post. I'm in the same boat or C7 to be exact. I'd prefer the map screen 24/7. Instead I have to pay on$tar for guidance.Maybe I answered my own question.

How do you know you get map images from OnStar?

As I understood it, OnStar "nav" just gives you *verbal* directions.

(I'm not 100% sure, as I've always had the factory installed Nav, but thought that is the way 'OnStar nav' worked)

That is the way it worked on my other cars without Nav. If you have Nav Onstar will download the map to your Nav unit which is a neat way to upgrade your route data file since it doesn't forget info OnStar sends. My Nav unit started recognizing my house address after I downloaded instructions to get home from some place.

Nav can be installed on cars withoug Nav. There are several vendors that sell kits. You can even add Car Play/Adnroid Auto. The prices range from about $800-$1300 in parts. There are MANY threads with instructions YouTuves on how to install it here.

So Bill, my infotainment unit (C7) has a Nav icon. The display does not show a constant screen of location in map form. When I need directions I go to app or contact OnStar and they dowload directions with voice prompts and small directional icons. My thinking was that all units are the same except software. Which may allow some to view a constant map. So, can I change software to provide a constant map of location or are the units different in every way?

That looks like they have designed the non Nav unit so it can display OnStar maps. However, you just can't change over to a Nav unit by changing software. 2014 cars had a Nav unit without PDR instead of OnStar calculating your directions the Nav unit could do so separate from OnStar, 2015 and newer cars have a PDR with Nav functions, however, the Nav unit works like the 2014 Nav Unit. You don't need OnStar to have directions. You have the option of downloading OnStar maps if you have the Directions Plan. I only have the Protection Plan which doesn't include directions. The protection plan is about $100 per year cheaper than the Directions Plan.

I used to have a Malibu with no Nav function and no screen. OnStar Directions Plan would display the route on the center console radio display as a string of words and use the speakers to provide Audio Directions. My Grandson is still driving that Malibu and he tried the Directions Plan for a month and it did the same thing as when I had the free year after I purchased the car.

The nice thing about the Directions Plan is you can actually talk to somebody at OnStar if you are having a problem finding something.

Add the correct HMI, put the antenna next to the front left speaker and you can have the NAV unit fully functional.

You can do it yourself if you're not too chicken to remove a few pieces of trim. I mean a couple. A-Pillar, Visor, kick panel, speaker cover on left top of dash and I think that might be all. The HMI is sitting on the driver's left, just above the kick panel. You pull out 5 wires, release a couple of clips and then pop in the new HMI unit and plug the wires back in to the HMI. The GPS antenna is run up inside the dash and located next to the speaker. I think it glues down or you can velcro it. Put the trim back and you've got NAV. Check the map version to see if it's the latest and greatest and you're all set.

Updates are done by getting a USB stick to plug in and an hour later the maps is updated.

This is the HMI. It has 5 wires coming out the bottom.

There is a thread on this forum that shows the work required and the trim removal needed to swap out the HDMI.

Are you sitting down? Sit.......

I believe it is somewhere around $1,000 for the box. I'll look for the link to the site where they are available. Well, I can't get to their site. They tell you the site in the video. I would imagine that all you'd need is the HMI and the antenna. I'd call a few of the vendors on here and see what it would cost to get the two parts. I usually get my stuff from Gene Culley www.cultragfactoryparts.com

I did FINALLY get to the site, it was the slowest thing I've ever seen. Something must be amok on the internets today. The Price was no where close to what I said, it was actually $999.95 BUT they had free shipping????

The HMI is what you need. Finding it at the lowest price is your task.

Just installed the IO6 Navigation module. I now have Navigation and works just like the oem. The hardest part for me was getting the wiring harnesses to unplug and getting the module to release from the bracket. I am very happy with the outcome. The module come with instructions and URL's for installation etc.

Just curious if you lost any functions from your old setup to installing the IO6 module. I was told for 2015 model the car play/android would not function. No big deal since using my phone to mirror to head unit uses data from my provider. Intentions are to cut the cord from OnStar & Verizon while driving. Is XM radio and phone (call/text) still working? Sorry for so many Q&A's. Just trying to justify the expense. OnStar Guidance is costing me $435 per year.OR I could trade for a vette with OEM Nav - Not!

Bfon I did not lose any functions but actually gained a couple I now have traffic and weather. You are correct on the 2014/2015 model years but there was a note saying to call them if installing in a 2014/2015. I have a 2017 so no problems.
