I have read several claims that mileage difference between LS3 vs LT1 is not great, and that DOD was to appease the green sector of Govt. Also there has been discussion over longevity of DOD motors. How can you run a 4 cylinder motor out of an 8, and expect perfectly equal engine wear on all cylinders? If it was possible, wouldn't the technology be utilised to create a 2 cylinder car from a 4 cylinder car, and a 3 from a 6?????
Is there a simple way of disabling the DOD function to make the LT1 run on 8 cylinders ALL THE TIME? This would be especially good for Auto owners who want real sound all of the time. And allows for easier addition of after market exhaust products which sound loud at all times. Not everyone wants to drive a V8 and have noise levels as if sitting in their lounge at home with the stereo and tv off. Coming from an LS2 with a cam and supercharger, the standard LT1 drives like a pig. Put your foot down, and you wait what seems like over a second for any response.
Just to expand. My last car was equivalent to a GTO G8. It was 620 hp with a lumpy cam, and a 1900 Edelbrock equiv supercharger. 6 speed manual. Consistent open road - and this is single lane, up and down, sea level to 3500 ft and back down to sea level, with overtaking anything one comes across, and time on other side of road is important, so foot to floor in a lower gear, with possibly double the speed of slower traffic. Consistant 27 mpg. The DOD LT1 says 29 mpg on a good day. Is the 2 mpg really that important for the chugging along effect, and the baffled noise that really sounds like no other V8 I've ever owned, - I owned a Toyota Yaris that sounds as good at cruising speeds. Come on GM, what are you doing? A sports car should surely sound like a sports car? Esp if its a flagship model. Surely GM can offer an under table hint to disable this DOD, to make a V8 sound like a V8, all of the time. Just my thoughts.
Who, in reply, wants to buy a V8, and drive around in a 4 cylinder car? If you want a 4 cylinder, in hindsight, wouldnt you just by a Toyota, Nissan, or Mitsubishi?
I could personally careless if only 4 cylinders are firing while I'm cruising down the highway with the cruise control set. If it saves me gas, cool, might as well use it

I understand what your saying. When in 4 cylinder mode... Cruising I wished it had a little more growl
Save gas? Until recently, our gas has been USD 6.54 a gallon for premium. Even with that cost, Id still go with sound over economy. Even now, its USD 5.80 here. Even at this, I would still rather sound over economy. Thats why i have a V8 rather than a 4 cyl car.
My car hasn't seen v4 mode yet, just keep it out of Eco. As far as removing it, talk to some of the engine builders such as Texas speed and such, there are solutions.
