So direct injection does cause carbon buildup...
Seafoam has been hit-or-miss on the N18, N20, etc. Can't comment on the LT1/LT4.
Most of the guys with N54/N55 platform took the walnut blasting route, but we waited for somewhere between the 35-50k mile mark so it wasn't really a huge deal. Local guy to me would do it for a cool $350, including dis/re assembly and provide you the photos.
Even with catch cans, coking was pretty bad at 40-50k miles.
