Default Headers? ARH or KOOKS??????????

Looking to buy headers for my 2014 c7 z51. I read a lot of threads on headers. However, I would like some feedback. Currently, I have the Borla Atak catback exhaust. My goals are mainly sound and and a little more HP. I do not plan on a supercharging the motor.

Most importantly, I do not want to "tune" the car!

The 2 options that I have in mind are:

1) ARH mid headers with cats & Corsa x-pipe

2) Kooks 1 7/8 long tube with Kooks green cat x-pipe

Thoughts??????????????????????

My thoughts are this.....Get the long tubes, ARH or Kooks seem to be as good as any. I think getting your car tuned properly on a dyno is very important. Your tuner will show you the air fuel ratio with your current tune (after your long tubes are installed). He will explain where you are losing power. Make sure you pick someone who has tuned many C7's....and knows what he is doing. You will not regret getting your car tuned.

Both MFG's make great pipes..however, ARH seem to be the favorite for quality, ease of installation and power.....Vengeance Racing in Atlanta swears by them......I questioned them about Kooks too, but they said if they were the very best..they would be installing them...

So if you want headers...you must tune.....to get your money's worth. Plan B on the Corsa X pipe removes rear Cats....less weight...more sound....

Plan C.....have the stock exhaust manifolds ported.....300.00 and not void the warranty and pick up 11 hp.

Lots of documentation on the forum here regarding both...

Well said. I went with plan B and installed the Corsa X and really like it. Add an AFE intake and you have a nice bolt on package that sounds much better than stock

Why are you against a tune? Warranty?

There are plenty of mail order or handheld type tuners you can turn back to stock if you need some warranty work.

You gotta tune the car.

Thanks for all of the replies. The warranty issue is my biggest concern with tuning.

I'd just do a handheld tuner then. You can return it to stock if needed. Plenty out there for intake and headers. You gotta tune the car.

I have the Diablo Intune. I am convinced that it is untraceable. However, there is no option for headers in the "tune" menu.

If I took it to a shop and had it Dynotuned wouldn't GM be able to detect it if I had a warranty claim ?

I went with Kooks and the Green cats. I am still waiting to get them on the car.

I was not wanting to tune them either and in my research it seems like they perform about the same as the ARH Mid-Length headers (catted) with a catless X-pipe. I read at least one post where they were dynoed and the fuel air ratio was about stock. (This is untuned for Kooks and ARH Mids, not sure how they stack up tuned vs tuned)

Honestly I don't think there will be much difference between the ARH-Mids and the Kooks with green cats (as far as performance). Price was about the same and I went with Kooks because I could get both pieces from the same manufacturer. I ordered from Maryland Speed and they made it easy to get the headers ceramic coated which is a nice bonus.

Even a handheld tuner tune can be seen once returned to stock....

If you're going to run cats, I would go with Kooks. Stay away from ARH hi flow cats. They are more prone to failure.

Hi David,
Is there an issue we can help with?

IMO if you don't want to tune you should just not get headers. The majority of your HP increase will be from the tune, not headers.

I think it was Vengance that dyno'd both Kooks and ARH and posted sheets. If you can find it, the obvious choice will be ARH. There is another recent post of someone getting 25 HP out of ARH mids with no tune, so there is your answer if you want to NOT get a tune...
