I've only tried it once and only one of my wheels spinning so cut out of it pretty quick. Normally I just do clutch dumps and go with it instead of applying the brakes.
I have tried everything I can think of track mode, race setting, just pressing the traction button once, I just gave up and blipped the throttle and did a quick spin just to pull up to the line.
I remember doing this with no problem in a 2014 I rented a year ago, and I think all I did was press the the TC button two times, to turn off traction control and stability control. I was able to do brake stands, and drift the car with no issues. I don't remember what driving mode it was in, I think it was sport. I haven't tried it on my own yet, since I have to pay for the tires :-)

Press the center console button once to turn off TC, press and hold for 5-7 seconds to turn off everything. If your tire pressure is low the computer won't let you turn off Active handling.
I have an A8 also. I usually do my runs in Sport mode, burn outs in M1 with TC off only.
