Odd noise

I had been getting an odd slapping/popping noise when ever the car switches to 4 cylinder mode. The sound is sporadic but seems to occur mostly when the car is under load. To me it sounds like the valves/flaps in the NPP mufflers were not shutting all the way. The dealer replaced the right side muffler but the sound has returned. My guess is the problem was with both mufflers but wanted to get some opinions from the experts here. The car is 2014 Z51 with A6 and under 10K miles. When I leave the car in manual mode I never hear this gawd awful sound.

Is it coming from the rear of the car?

It almost sounds like it is coming from the center of the car but it happens for such a fleeting moment, less than 3 seconds I would guess, it's hard to pinpoint.

Does it sound like it comes from the motor? I ask that because with DOD there's some lifter engagement and de-engagement going from v4 to v8 and vise versa. Those DOD lifters are junk.

It doesn't seem to come from the motor. it's like a rattle popping noise. So far my C6 was much more reliable so I'm becoming disappointed.
