I'm thinking of investing in a J2534 device along with a subscription to GM website so that I can diagnose and update my C7 myself.
There are lots of J2534 devices on eBay, most of which say they are compatible with VW and nothing else. I'm assuming that these devices are manufacturer specific?
I did find one GM compatible one here made by Drew Technologies. Would this work?
I'm assuming I can use it to update everything in the car, from the ECU to the infotainment system and everything in between?
Yes you want the Drewtech Mongoose Pro GM2 cable. This will allow you to use the tech2win or gds2 diagnostics, update or program modules, etc.
Thanks. I was also looking into a DiabloSport tuning module. I don't suppose the J2534 interface can also be used for flashing canned tunes too can it? If so, is that something that most tuning companies can offer, or is it more specialist?
How 'bout this iCarsoft i900...claims to be able to access more than just the PCM.
"The iCarsoft i900 is a multifunction diagnostic scanner and tester which has been designed specifically for the full line of GM vehicles. It will enable you to read and clear diagnostic faults from main systems within your vehicle such as SRS airbags, ABS Antilock Brakes, engine, transmission, and body modules. It will also allow you to read live data in real time format."
The attached PDF doc is a list of GM module functions that can be accessed with the i900.

The tune is usually linked to the software used to edit it. I dont know of a way you can take a file from HP Tuners and upload it through EFI Live as an example or in this case using the drewtech cable.

Problem is it doesn't reference any vehicles made after the 2013 model year. Either it hasn't been updated for the C7 or there add is screwed up,

Right, so each tuner device has their own proprietary file format. Thats a shame.
For option 3 you can purchase the gds2 and for your second option you need the service programming package. For your first option what do you mean about fooling around with hidden options?
Make sure you download the tutorial videos for each tab in the j2534 toolbox that are relevant to you. That way if you are offline but working on your car they are there immediately for help.
