Default Should temperature change 15 degrees?

Have had the car for about 3-1/2 months. Didn't do much driving at first because of the weather.

But in the past few weeks, I have put on about 1000 miles. I have noticed that when I am on the highway, the temperature gauge reads about 195 - a rough guess according to spacing of graduation marks between 100 and 220.

But I have noticed that a couple of times when I slowed down - such as stop and go traffic in town or slow moving due to congestion - the temperature started going up. In fact it has gone up to around 210/215 (using "my" interpretation of the scale). It might have kept going up, but I was able to speed up, so am not sure what would have happened if I had maintained the slower speed.

So, my question is.....is this normal? All of my other vehicles maintain the same temperature (or at least the same temperature indication) regardless of speed. Or is this something that I should have investigated?

Thanks in advance for any info / suggestions / etc.

That's why your other cars have dummy gauges, so people don't ask too many questions.

Normal vehicle operation. Just wait til summer...

My 2010 Mini Cooper S used to run 220 all the time except for ar WOT. (wide open throttle). At WOT it would drop to about 175F. (computer controlled water pump, and tstat).

So not to worry.

I remember when I took one of my friends for a ride in my then new 2001 GMC Duramax diesel equipped pickup and he told me I better stop because something was wrong with the engine. His concern was the oil pressure gauge was changing with engine speed unlike his Ford HD pickup with the dummy gauges that just stayed at midscale regardless of the actual sensor reading. I thought it was pretty sad when someone who grew up on a farm had so little mechanical aptitude.

As we become less knowledgeable pretty soon new cars will have only a single big LCD screen that will display either a happy face for all is well or a frowning face to show the drive train is toast.

On edit: the electric cooling fan isn't going to go to high speed until the temperature increases quite a bit so in stop in go traffic you will often see a fairly rapid rise until the point the fan is commanded to higher speed. One oddity of electric cooling fan equipped vehicles is that to a point they will run cooler with the AC system turned on since the engine cooling fan stays activated to provide airflow across the condenser even though the engine coolant temperature isn't hot enough to trigger activation.

Interesting aspects of effects of electric fan. Thank you.

As others have said this is perfectly fine. I am wondering why you are staring at the analog gauges and trying to interpret the temperature. Go to the Tour Display and you will have the temperature displayed in digital format (showing 195, 196, 197, etc) and you won't need to interpolate on a lousy analog gauge. There is only one gauge on the car that needs to displayed in analog format and that is the tach.

You can put it in Touring mode Performance and get a digital temperature of both oil and water.

As long as the engine temperature warning light doesn't illuminate don't worry about it.

Glad to know this is perfectly fine.

I am still looking at the analog gauge to interpret the temperature since I haven't yet gotten familiar with any other way to get a reading. I appreciate you mentioning how to get a digital reading.

So far I have been keeping track of mileage between fill-ups (Trip A) and total mileage for trips (Trip B). I haven't looked at the option to view temperature.

Thank you for letting me know about that option.
