M7, V4 is only active in Eco mode. A8, it's active in all driving modes. You can turn it off with a tune (ex. Diablo handheld) or with Diablo's Sprint device (no tuning).
As Kracka noted active in all driver modes with A8. You can leave in manual mode, use a Range AFM disabler, or have it tuned. I drive mostly in manual although I do have a Range device that I rarely use.

You can turn off V4 with an A8 if you select the transmission's manual mode. That's the Only way to turn it off. The M7 will not cycle V4/V8 unless you select econo mode.
