Im trying to isolate an engine noise in the front of the engine. It could possibly be from one of the accessories. I was wondering if it would be a problem if i ran the engine for a few minutes without the accessory belt on?? Thanks
Now a few moments, or a few second, OK... but you'll not be turning the water pump and that can cause hot spots in the heads, failures, warpage, whatever.
For some reason I thought we may have had an electric water pump, but here's the unit with the belt drive:

Cool pic Dave.. hadn't seen that one before actually..
From a cold start under 90 seconds at idle wouldn't scare me but nothing beyond that time limit and if the engine is already at operating temperature (but not running hot) not for more than 20 seconds.
I would try a mechanic's stethoscope before pulling the belt to try and localize the noise.
Of course if this were one of the older Cadillacs with "camel mode" where the engine is designed to bank switch cylinders to safely run with no coolant for a short time it would be a different deal. You could probably safely get away with more time with your LT1 but risking significant engine damage to run down a noise is a bad bet AND time can get away from you quickly while you are hot on the trail of the problem.
