I picked up a 2014 Z51 A6 about 6 months ago. Are there any solutions that will reduce or get ride of those ridiculous sounds under the hood when the AFM is doing its V4/V8 thing. I know if you go to M and use the paddles it goings to V8. I know that you can buy a plug in devise for $200.00 that will keep it in V8 100% of the time. I would have thought by now someone, Not GM of course, would have a work around. I am not sure what they did to solve the noise issue in the new Vettes. Thanks, first Thread.
Not sure what you mean by V4/V8 sounds my 17 GS sounds no different in either mode. If you don’t want to use a range module then DiabloSport offers a handheld tuner that turns off afm in the software but this approach has possible warranty implications. You might consider getting the noise diagnosed at a competent shop first.

Your 17 GS will not have the sounds of the valves releasing pressure or something. It is only in the 2014 year ...their first shot at the AFM system and they blew. The fix came in 2015 in pieces. Some have the noise and some do not. I would have thought some bright person would have come up with a work around. If you shift to Manual and use paddles that is one work around. It was totally unknown to me before I bought the 2014 because all demo rides were a little more spirited.
If the noise bothers you that much why not just install a Range AFM Disabler. Just plug it in and go. Many of us including myself use one. I can’t imagine that an official GM fix would be any cheaper unless you have a warranty that would take care of it. Programming it out with a tuner would be more involved and potentially more costly.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I wanted to look at all the options around and it looks like it is time to get a Range plugin. I am an Engineer, so I was kind of interested to find out what GM did to fix the noise Issue. Does anyone know of a publication or write up of some type that explains this AFM system and its progression?
I have not read of any mechanical change to the engine 2014-18. The A6 transmission in 2014 was changed to the A8 in 2015 and there have been 3 (?) updates to the torque converter, but AFAIK nothing to the engine AFM mechanicals per se.
if your car is making an objectionable noise during the V8-V4 transition, and you're sure it's from the engine, I think its an indication that there's something abnormal going on in your particular engine and you need to have a mechanic look at it.
