Default 87 octane

stingray manual says 93 octane is recommended, not required. Says 87 octane is acceptable. I don’t track my car, it’s a daily driver. What is the harm in running 87 octane in it? I say it will not harm the engine, only limit the performance.

If you really get into the paddle really hard for a period of time you would get knock I would say being this motor is 11:7:1 comp. Robert

I don't understand this thinking. I DD mine too 80 miles a day so it's not a garage queen.

You buy a high performance car for 60k then worry about 20 cents a gallon more for gas ?? Think about it. Let's say you fill it up and put 13 gallons in. 20 cents more a gallon $2.60 difference between 87 and 93..... I bet you spend more than that on a cup of coffee in the morning.

87 octane plus hot weather plus full throttle is a recipe for disaster. Don't cheap out on the gas, stick with the good stuff. And try to run nothing but Top Tier while you're at it also.

how do I determine top tier. I know I can expect good additives in Chevron, Mobil, Shell; but should I assume Costco (don’t laugh) dos NOT have the best gas?
FYI aim in California and 93 is virtually not available, although there are 2 stations with 100 racing fuel...at 9.xx a gallon

Costco gas actually is Top Tier! I use it all the time in my C7, as it's also ethanol free here in Canada. The only issue is that it's only 91 octane here, so I only run it in cooler weather, the rest of the time I run mostly 94 octane.

Should have known someone would chime in with this nonsense..

And not sure where you get $0.20 more? 93 is +$0.60 more than 87 in Texas. Fill up with 16 gallons of gas is an extra $9.60. 1 tank of gas per week is $500 more a year. OP wants to know if this extra money is worth it?

OP, My thoughts are stay away from possible detonation from the higher compression from running 87. I usually run 93 but do not hesitate to fill up with 89. I will not risk anything with 87 though for the little savings it provides..

You can use 87 but the PCM will switch progressively to the low octane table because of knock retard.

There is a knock learn factor which is a value Between 0 and 1, depending how much knock the car sees.

Then the pcm makes an average of high octane and low octane tables based of the knock learn factor.

The timing on the low octane table sucks, between 15 and 20 degrees less.

I wouldn’t run 87 unless emergency and would avoid full throttle. You won’t break anything though, because of all built in safeties.

How do I know that ? Because I’m tuning myself my bolts on GS with HP tuners

But again I digress , did we really buy a $60,000 to over $100,000 dollar performance car to worry about saving $500.00 a year on fuel .... if that's the case then you really bought the wrong car .....

Ok so here’s what I learned. Keep my mouth shut and don’t ask questions, or else I will get lectured about how cheap and stupid I am.

Johncarter: I hate to see someone new to Corvette Forum get a bad impression. The Forum is actually a great resource and most replies are not rude. But it's still an Internet forum - so maintain a thick skin and continue to participate.

Dont do that. Most on here are good folks. Internet is public, so at times you get people who are not the most friendly and the anonymity allows them to be jerky when in person they wouldnt say a word.

Hahahah whatever $500 a year. Really ???? So you buy a corvette and your concerned about $500 A YEAR ?

Nonsense ?? So the OP buys a C7 for what, to commute ? And then worries about gas prices ? Wow ...

Th'only time I wish I was in Texas. Over here in Mississippi, it's 70-80 cents more per gallon. In CA, it's 20 cents more from regular to premium, but ~70 cents more per gallon than MS pricing.

If I was DD in CA, it might be something I'd consider, but since I like to hammer it, I pay the freight. It helps that I rarely let the tank fall to 1/4 full; it doesn't seem to hurt as bad at each fillup. Also, I don't wait til I have to have gas; I'll refill whenever I'm near 1/2 and see a good price. Sometimes that can save 10-15 cents per gallon.
