Default Another Rear End Noise Thread

Posted this in the main forum, but figured I'd post it here as well, in case.

I think this is a little different than issues others have posted, but maybe not...

My 2017 M7 Z07, (9,800 miles) has developed a very transient noise that has me both worried and confused. The sound just started this week, about a week after an autocross event, (although the car is a former Spring Mountain car so it's been driven plenty hard in the past).

As I said above, the sound is VERY transient, and in fact NEVER occurs when the car is first started and driven, it only manifests after the car has been driven a bit (5 to 10 miles), and usually after it's been parked for a short while, then restarted (imagine driving it to dinner, eating, then starting it up after). It is also only evident for a brief period of time at lower RPM's in first and second gear. Once the car is moving and in the higher gears, there is no sound. I've driven it in stealth mode, with the top off, just to make sure it's not being drowned out by engine or highway/tire sounds and it's not audible.

The sound itself is hard to describe. it's not the whining or moaning others have described in other threads. It's more of a grinding or scraping sound that seems eccentric to the left rear wheel. It almost sounds like a worm pad, but the pads are new and everything seems to be seated properly. I was thinking diff, but I don't get any warning lights, and you would think the noise would be present at first start up when the diff oil had settled and wasn't circulated. I don't think it's the trans, as I don't feel anything (vibrations, etc) translating through the shift linkage. My only other guess is wheel bearing maybe? But again, the fact that the sound and faint feel (very faint) never occur at first start up seems to be the confounding fact.

Also, since the sound first started, I haven't driven the car much and not hard at all, and no hard braking. Only driven it to try to diagnose the problem. Obviously, driving it any further isn't helping matters, so I wanted to pick the collective brains, then head to the dealer.

NOTE* As stated above, it's a Spring Mountain car, so there's a warranty block on the engine and drive train. I knew this, and it really isn't an issue for me. The engine has been modded and tuned, so that warranty was voided anyway, so I only really lost the drive train. Still not cheap to repair, but I'm not adverse to taking it in and spending the money to get it fixed.

Because of the transient and intermittent nature of the condition, I don’t want to have the dealer return the car with a “could not duplicate” response. I wanted to be a bit better educated on other experiences before I head in.

All help appreciated.

Do you have a GoPro? It’s virtually impossible to diagnose anything over the internet using just “words” and description. If you can capture the noise with a GoPro or even cellphone camera it’ll increase the likelihood someone will be able to identify the noise.

This sounds very similar to the beginning of my Drive shaft assembly bearing failure, which just started again at 6K miles.

I had that same noise, it would come and go. I took it to the dealer and they replaced some rear end bearing. They could not duplicate the sound but the mechanic knew what he was looking for and took it apart and found metal shaving from the bearing. Car was an auto with 4000 miles or so. I am not home now but I can look at the paperwork and let you know exaywhat was replaced if you want.

I appreciate the offer but not to worry right now. I am going to a different dealership and will have a certified corvette technician along with the service rep seems to speak corvette. After I bring this to resolution I will post again my results. I am hoping for the best!
