Default A8 question

If the gear selector is in drive and in 1st gear and at idle, then it is paddle shifted into 2nd, does the transmission shift automatically upon acceleration through the rest of the gears or are manual shifted required?

If it is in D and a manual shift is performed it will go back into auto mode after a period of time.

I doubt you can be in “D” and paddle shift to 2nd while standing still. I know you can in “M”.

From the 2019 Owner's Manual:

When the shift lever is in D (Drive), press either the right (+) plus paddle or the left (−) minus paddle to place the transmission in Temporary Manual Paddle Shift mode. The gear indicator next to the shift lever, in the cluster, and in the HUD will display an M, even though the shift lever is still in D (Drive). To exit the system, hold the (+) plus paddle for more than one second. The system will return to automatic shifting after six seconds of cruising at a steady speed, no manual shifts, no aggressive cornering, or when the vehicle comes to a stop.

everything OB1 GS said is dead on.. the other thing I would suggest to any one playing with the paddles while driving spiritedly is this...

if you leave the shifter in D and use the paddles to downshift, say to roll race someone from 2nd 3rd or 4th, wherever, you need to use the Manual mode instead.. and once you got WOT, click the gear selector BACK into Drive.. this way the next upshift at WOT happens at redline and is managed by the computer... it's 50/50 proposition to try and time that upshift... it's not worth it.. just watch the ZR1 vs Huracan youtube video from Dragtimes to see what trying to use the paddels to race someone does lol.. it's comical..

so it's M> select rolling race optimum gear> then go WOT (immediately) put selector back into Drive, just push the selector up it will slide right in, no depressing the button.

I was under the impression that DCTs were sequential and didn't realize that they could jump gears. Learn something new everyday. My current DSG (VW) will not let you stall and will downshift as needed. Basically, you can brake going up to the stop sign normally and the car will keep downshifting until you get to 1st (complete stop). Also the same constraints going up - you cannot overrev as the transmission will upshift before the fuel cut (about 7,000 rpm) regardless of what mode you're in. VW/Audi follows convention and yes, you can enter manual mode temporarily at any time by engaging the paddles (usually a downshift).

That's the way I do it. Works great every time.

DCT's are not sequential. They operate more as two manual transmissions in unison. The reason they do not skip gears well is that would force it to change gears on the same shaft which means it would have to disengage the clutch on the gearset, change the gear then reengage. This takes time. When selecting the next adjacent gear all the trans has to do is disengage one clutch and engage the other. There is no actual gear change that takes place at the time of the shift.

Ant eh A8 is a truly auto box, not dct. You can skip all the gears you want in it. In fact, if you are in manual mode in 8th doing 40mph and hold the downshift paddle it will shift all the way down to 2nd or the lowest gear possible.
