Default A really dumb question...I'm afraid to ask!

OK, what the hell. My old C6 AUTO...cruising along next to a competitor...you want to do is scream ahead...all you had to do is floor it and the thing down-shifted ASAP and away you went.

So my new C7 Grand Sport A8...no matter what I try there's a delay if you hold the left manual shifter and wait for it to shift down then floor it. In Drive mode...when you hit the gas it shifts down but not enough and there's a delay before it shifts down lower. All this and my competitor pounds me while I wait for this thing to go.

So HOW...HOW do I go in DRIVE from cruising to INSTANT take off?

What mode do you have the car in? Touring?

The mode selector does make a difference here. Drive it in Sport or occasionally in Track Mode and see how it responds to your foot.

When you see you have or might have a competitor ... put lever in manual mode, downshift to a lower gear... preferably to one that you are at 4000 rpm’s and once you take off... push lever into drive.

I don't know what it is that makes guys think they need to turn the A8 into a manual when they want to go faster instantly. The A8 shifts faster on hard acceleration than an M7 and in the situation you're describing, using the paddles to make some sort of magic happen is a waste of time. All you have to do to get the instant response you want is floor the pedal and let the A8 do it's thing. If your GS won't do that you have a problem with the tranny.

I wish things were as easy as some of you make them sound.

Mode doesn't matter...except how the thing shifts UP once you're on it.
Manual shift is not fast or instant either.
Both of the above have a delay before the thing rockets out.

My gut says the post above about "2 more gears to deal with" is credible. When Drive Mode of Manual Shift Mode when you floor it or hold the down paddle back it seems to shift to one gear above lowest and then it goes to the lowest and away you go. Either way there's a delay. I've never driven a vehicle when you floor the gas the tranny doesn't shift down to the lowest gear and away it goes.

Good thing I prefer manual mode but can't figure out why this thing doesn't do what I talk about...my C6 did.

I don't understand what you are trying to do with the paddles, you don't hold them down, you just pop it each time you want to change to a lower or higher gear. It will rev match and go down to the lowest one possible given your speed and rpm. There's no secret that the A8 in manual mode will not shift as fast as some other cars but the what's the point unless you're on the track? The A8 will beat the M7 every time on straight forward acceleration. If you're having a lagging shift in auto mode, you have a problem with the transmission programming and need to see your dealer. As far as manual mode, given the the A8 acceleration is faster by every measurement, what's the fascination with shifting manually? I don't know how old you are but when I was younger we all had to have 4-speeds because they were faster but those days are gone because of today's auto trans technologies. Maybe it's just nostalgia for some and that's fine with me but I prefer to utilize new technology, otherwise I'd still be driving a Studebaker.

Naw...everything is working perfectly. The A8 is amazing...shifts super-quickly...finds power at any speed. I just can't find a way to "be cruising at a constant speed in higher gear (in ANY Mode), then floor the pedal, and have it grab the lowest gear and scream (like my C6 did)". It takes it a good second to find that lowest gear before it screams.

I've had a C5, a C6 and 4 C7's (a Stingray, GS and 2 ZO6's). All were/are auto and never had this issue. Either way, the C7 is a faster car than any stock C6 except the ZO6 or ZR-1. I still think you have a programming issue or are overly sensitive or maybe just missing your C6. If this were a more common problem I would expect other forum members would have jumped in to say they had the same problem. At any rate, enjoy your C7 and if you want some real difference in performance, grab a used ZO6. Is your car new or used?

At cruising speed, blip the throttle to the floor and return. The computer will shift the trans to the lowest gear based on the current speed, and will hold that gear (and engine speed) for several seconds.
At this point, when you floor it again, it cannot go to a yet lower gear, so there will be no lag. So, drop the hammer, and be ready for whiplash.

I've only had this thing 2 months...new. I guess I still have to play. No Z06 for me...normal aspiration only. Like the Subject Line of this thread said...LOL

Ya, this programming is sure interesting...holding those revs and then pow!
