You need to plug a code reader into the OBDCII port to see some of the codes. Not all codes will show on a generic code reader.

Check Engine Light (CEL) AKA Service Engine Soon (SES) says the car has recorded and srored a code that describes a condition that may be abnormal for the car's function. Pep Boy's and the like, will read the code for free and then you can decide what to do about it. The code is read off the plug located under the left side of the dash. Simple readers can read the big codes but it takes a reader like the dealer's tech uses to read all the range of codes that the ECM can store.
