My airbag service light came on at 35,549 miles 2 months after factory warranty expired. I took it in because it will be needing a state inspection in October and that will make it fail. I also let them know I could hear a loud clattering coming from the engine compartment between 1200 an 1500 RPMs rolling. Rick Hendrick of Norfolk calls me back with bad news. The mechanics says that my cam and lifters need to be replaced and the passenger side seat needs a new module. The drive train warranty covers the cams and labor but my gold status extended warranty does NOT cover the safety equipment required to safely operate the vehicle. They told me the kit and labor and programming will run me $995.00 the kit is 499 and the rest is the programmer and labor. Does this seem high and is this really that hard of a job that is requires 3 hours? Can a good back yard mechanic replace the seat module? Help, I just sunk 600 dollar in my truck so I could turn in the Vette to be worked on and this may require me to accidentally drive that Vette off a pier. They don't make them like they used to. I have had my suburban for 18 years and it has never been touched by a dealer. I did all the work on it from water pump to rear diff. Any suggestion would be helpful.
just did thin on mine. You have to remove the center console plastics, dash fascia and radio. Watch some tutorials so you are careful with it. It's fairly easy to do and would probably take me 40min now if i had to do it again.
Well got good news from the dealer and bad news all in the same sentence. GM is covering 60% of the total cost of the seat module and 100% of the cam and lifter replacement. Apparently the clattering I heard was my can lobes and lifter failure. The results of the AFM. So I will be in the market for the that thing that stops it from going into V4 mode.
They are still working the engine. The airbag module in the seat, seems there is a jell pack of sorts in the base that when you set on it, it squishes the jell pressure to the switch. The jell managed to leak from the unit and onto the rug under the seat. Thousand dollar leak. I asked the tech what is going to stop this from happening again and he told me He doesn't know. The engine was clean all maintenance kept up and I did nothing to damage the parts. So this engine is destine to fail again. Might be getting rid of this car soon.
