Default 2014 C7 Engine Temp. Question

Let me start of by apologizing for my stupidity, I am the least mechanical inclined man on the planet lol (2014, Z51 3LT if that matters, 21k miles btw)

So here it goes, Quick question, was driving around and noticed all the sudden while I was stopped to talk to someone yesterday in my neighborhood, my engine temp gauge went from the always steady 220 spot up to 240-245ish, once I started driving within 40 seconds gauge went back to the usual 220 spot, at the red light started back up to 240-245, as soon as light turned green, went back to normal within seconds. Parked the car, shut off the car for about 10 minutes, and on my drive home (about 5 miles) the temp stayed at normal temps and even let it run in the garage for a few minutes and temp gauge never moved. I’ve never seen my gauge move so this had me pretty alarmed but now not sure why it did it, then stopped after shutting the car off?

Fast forward to about an hour ago, I let the car idle for 20 minutes, analog gauge held at 220 as usual but the digital seems to reflect lower? These 2 never seem to match. With AC on, fan comes on intermittently but not constant, is that normal? While idle even at 220 with A/C off fan never seems to kick on but temperature never fluctuated. I can barely hear the fan, I thought it used to be super loud but maybe since it’s cold out it’s not spinning as fast when A/C is on? Picture was of my dash while it was at idle in the garage today.

Normal for the idling stuff. Having a spike while driving the car is not normal. See this thread and see if it matches your situation. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-to-260-a.html

Bottom line, the 2014 and the early 2015 had fan controller issues. The fan, housing and fan controller come as 1 unit. The fan was failing to come on when it was required and the temp would rocket up on the car. To "fix" it, you turned off the engine and then restarted it and the fans would come on screaming on high. The temp would fall like a rock and everything would be fine until the "next" time it had a hissy fit.,

Use the gauge in touring mode with the numbers for coolant temp, that is the most accurate.

I would be worried if you car is getting into the 240s during winter, that is not normal. My guess is just need to swap in a new thermostat, maybe its not opening properly.

Is it normal while the AC is on that the fan is not on constantly? I noticed it would turn on and off, so I wasnt sure if it should be running non stop while the AC is running? Or once it hits temp inside the car, the fan stops running?

The 2014's analog gauge is NOT accurate, it is basically an idiot light that reads below 220 when "cold", right at 220 when "normal" and above 220 when "hot". If you want the accurate temp monitor the digital gauge in the Touring DIC display.

I track my car (2014 Z51 M7)) and the digital temp reads 220 max while lapping in hot FL, so 240 seems way high for street driving. Your water temp should stabilize around 200 under normal driving conditions and only vary about + / - 10 degrees.

So either thermostat or fan relay issue I'd bet. The fan relay is a common problem in early model year cars.

So drove it again today for several miles including 2 miles on the highway, and even at idle at red lights and once when I gunned it on the highway the warmest it showed was 205, 199-200 when I gunned it on the highway), the car stayed between 195-205 degrees, Is that still to hot? My analog gauge which is what up till Sunday I always looked at, (I thought 220 is what the car always ran at by looking at that gauge) never budged. And to clarify, the day it showed a higher temp, I never got warning lights, etc, The analog gauge just went up to a line or two below the red lines. but never over heated officially.

^^^ that sounds exactly like my 2014. Real digital temp hovers around 200 while the silly analog gauge just sits at 220 once warmed up.

The 2014 thermostat is set to around 190 degrees - more info here: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ermostats.html

I truly hate the 2014's analog gauge... this is a sports car where high revs and thus higher temps can occur. I need to know quickly AND accurately what my temp is on track.

Are you worried that you over heated your engine? Unless the pointer or digit pegs in the red, you did NOT over heat your engine. The '14 runs happily at 220 The car will throw DIC messages and do all kinds of things when it is getting overheated.

I hope to never test it... but yes the manual indicates the DIC will start screaming at you with multiple engine overheat warnings:

Further digging indicates these warnings pop up at 256 degrees which seems close enough to the 260 red line indicated on the gauge.

I just got my 2014 Z51 so excuse my ignorance but I don't find a digital water temp gauge, only oil temperature. Can someone show me where I would find it? My water temp(analog) hovers around 220 once warmed up as well. Thanks in advance...

Digital water is in a pocket gauge that you can see in "Tour" mode. Set to tour, press the left arrow on the steering wheel and arrow down to Settings and select the water temp (I think that;s the path. Been a while. I usually stay in Sport.

Set the display to Tour, then select Performance... and you should see this:

Search YouTube, there are several videos that walk thru how to get the various screens - the manual isn't super helpful when it comes to all the options here.

Thanks for the help. That works but I can't believe the difference between that and the analog! My analog stays pretty much at 220 while this shows between 185 and 195 most of the time. I like those temps a lot better...

Yep... the 2014 analog gauge is full of lies

If you use an OBD-II scanner it reads the same as the digital gauge.

I found the TSB regarding this problem, see attached, per GM this is "normal" behavior.

Using Photoshop I fixed the 2014 gauge, now it accurately reflects how GM made it work...

I'm sure pilots would love an altimeter that worked like this

One week into owning a 2014 3LT convertible and had the overheating issue today while waiting for bridge with the a/c on. Did GM address the controller issues? If I replace the fan does it have an "improved" (fixed) controller? Scary stuff in South Florida where I regularly drive in traffic with the top down and the a/c on. ironically it never bothers my 22 year old 911 when I do that. Just sayin'...

Change the fan. The controller is fixed and the fan is stronger.
