Default Bumper/Splitter issue on track

Hi All, I’ve got an issue where the downforce on the factory stage 3 splitter when tracking has broken the clips on the bumper cover where it clips into the bottom edge of the grill. Now when I come in from a session the edge of the bumper cover will actually be pulled down over the bottom edge of the grill. I have to dig my finger tips in there and pop it back up into the groove. Only happens at higher speed tracks…VIR, WG…speeds over 150.

Has anyone seen this? I searched the forums and couldn’t find much. Is it worth seeing if GM will help? Car is still under warranty… With the clips being broken obviously the bumper cover will have to be replaced…how do I prevent this from happening again after that?

Thanks for any insight…

Need to see a pic. The grill bolts to the bumper so I don't see how the bumper is pulling down over the edge of the grill

Right here…no bolts just little plastic clips. The grill has a slot in it, and the bumper actually ends up below the lower edge of the slot.

Sorry about the bugs…haven’t had time to clean up after 2 days at the Glen…

Given that I'll end up buying a new bumper cover and grill at some point, I was contemplating just stitching across with black zip ties for now... But it'd be nice if there was some aftermarket splitter support available for the stock splitter. I don't want to put some massive track-only splitter on it that won't make it out of my driveway.

well If you don't want to use some super strong adhesive, another option you can do is use is splitter rods. used for basically the exact problem that you have right now. It will support the splitter to keep it straight under high downforce and also distribute the load better throughout your front bumper to stop it from pulling at the grill

Some examples linked here

First, GM doesn't give a squat... second, I don't know the design (never had mine apart), but I'd look for a way to fab an aluminum reinforcement/bracketry to stabilize it. Been there with other cars at Bonneville. All the best.

Got it, now it makes sense. Probably the best bet is as mentioned above....fab your own bracket. Some parts on the C7s are getting hard to get and the front bumper may be one that's no longer stocked. Even if you can get a new bumper, they have to paint it and you have to hope it matches. Ditto a used one.

No, I just ignore it. I'm talking to a couple of folks about bigger splitter options with an underwing and expect that will require different mounting anyway.

Saw this thread pop-up, I had the same thing happen to me, actually rebuilding the whole front, i.e. new bumper cover, grill, and splitter.

What I found was that the original dealer, did not install the splitter correctly, they didn't add the rivets. There are two sets of mounting holes, they only attached one set, the back set. The front set of holes, where rivets are to go, were not attached. this leads to a gap at high speed. I'd noticed over the years I got tire "marbles" in the gap between the splitter and bumper cover. It then got worse this year, and started breaking tabs on the bumper cover, grill, and there's even a "bumper cushion" behind the bumper cover that the grill attaches to, that had broken tabs. Thus leading me to replace many parts on the front end.

I have not solved this…just living with it for now, and planning a front end rebuild when this track season is over. I’m actually at VIR this weekend and after every session I just pop the bumper edge where the broken tabs are back up over the bottom of the grill. When I get a new bumper/grill I plan to have them plastic weld that joint where the bumper clips into the bottom edge of the grill and hope that helps keep those tabs from snapping.

Better start your order now for a new bumper, they are nearly impossible to get, along with nearly ever other body part it seems...

so I had this issue and the grill actually came out ontop of the bumper and it ended up breaking all the clips along the way, it’s worse than when it started. I was thinking of using epoxy underneath the grill for now but I’m going to be ordering a new bumper and hoping for the best.

Yeah mine does that also, pulls it right down over and you have to dig your fingertips in there and pop it back into place. Annoying for sure…

I like your stitch it w/ zip ties idea. Your car seems to be black or dark grey so black zipties will not stand out. I would also order the body parts now. But, it's a track car, do the zip ties, leave them there running w/ the existing parts until you decide to sell the car. Then you have the option to leave the zipped parts on or install the new stuff. That might depend on your buyer and what he intends to do w/ it.
