Hello All,
New to the forum, but lurked here a while. I have a 2016 Z51 that I bought in May '22. Got my dream car with all the features I wanted. One issue I had though was that I was wanting CarPlay and I got it. Problem is it only works for about 5 minutes before the screen starts to be slow to respond, then it'll lock up, the screen goes black and MyLink resets. It'll keep doing this until I stop, shut down, open the door, wait a few seconds, close the door, and restart after about 30-60 seconds. It'll do it again if the phone is connected via USB, even if I'm not in CarPlay.
I've taken it to the dealer since I bought from Carvana and there was an initial sale warranty. The dealer has told me they ordered the part, but got the wrong one, ordered the right one but it's not available and they can't say when they can get it. After a few months of nothing, I finally got a hold of the director who had someone call me to say they can't get the part, but that the part is the display. I'm not certain, but I don't think they display itself does any processing. I doubt that would be the issue. I'm thinking HMI based on what I've read here. Anyone else think it could be that?
My car was sold early 2016, so it probably has early CarPlay software. I went into the management mode and got the following (just showing what might be pertinent):
BUILDVERSION_BUILDMACHINE hi-z7821-g3g010
BUILDVERSION_TIMESTAMP 20150617114652
BUILDVERSION_CUSTVERSTRING 17.06.2015/5//GMG3G_LINUX_15.1A044
PRODUCT_PART_NUMBER 7515400342
HMI VERSION 15.1V009_R1_P5.13_MY16
SUPPLIER_ECU_SOFTWARE_VERSION_NUMBER GMG3G_LINUX_15.1A044
So question is: Does it need new a new HMI box (hardware), a software update, the display like the dealer thinks, or is it something else?
Sounds more like the HMI yes. The screen is near impossible to get right now for whatever reason. Might be worth reading the HMI upgrade thread on here about upgrading the 2016 version to the 2017+ version.
Not saying it is not the screen but the HMI is more likely.
You're correct about the screen. It doesn't have any real brains at all. It just shows whatever the HMI and PDR (if equipped) tell it to. It'd be like saying you need a new monitor for your PC because one specific piece of software isn't working right.
Your HMI software is 15.1A044. That's the 2nd oldest release for the HMI 2.5 system. I'd push them to update the software. There were quite a few stability fixes in subsequent releases. It should take them about an hour if they do it right.

Since the OP has a 2015 that still wont give him ACP or AA. The update and or upgrade for GM only works on the 2016+ model year stuff. Since the OP has a 2015 they will need the updated HMI module, that is a $1k upgrade to get AA/ACP.

Mine is a 2016. I did look at the potential of that upgrade to fix it thinking it would be updated hardware. But for now, I have an appointment for Friday to update the software.
FYI, I had a similar issue. I have an Infotainment HMI. About 10 months after install, I was running into an issue where the screen would black out and reset the screen constantly. I thought it might be the Infotainment unit, since I took it to a local dealer and got nowhere. I replaced with another unit but still had the issue, and then went back to my factory unit and STILL had the issue. Finally took it to an authorized corvette dealer and they ran an update that fixed it. I would start there to eliminate that possibility. It'll be a lot cheaper than buying a new HMI first.

If you have a 2016 then it is just an update to get AA/ACP installed. I had a 2016 Sierra that was in the same boat, got it without AA/ACP. Took it to the dealer, 4hrs later I had AA/ACP installed.
You are on HMI 2.5; so you are good. Black screen is a software fix. You can update yourself or dealer. I did a writeup on performing yourself. It looks more complicated then it really is. But after updates I got AA and stability fixes too. I also am an early 16 build.
Is there a way to tell what hmi software version a car is running? Nothing wrong with my system now but would like the “latest” version
It’s a button sequence (from another thread):

Update: Well much like the path from the initial dealer visit, to them ordering the wrong part, then the wrong part again, to getting a hold of someone after the first service rep left the company, I finally got an appointment to get the update. Of course this process didn't go smoothly either. First they couldn't get to it that day, and since it's my daily, had to go pick it up at the end of the Friday. Brought it back Monday morning, got a call by noon it was ready. Picked it up and same symptoms. Found the HMI hadn't been updated. They did update the radio module, but none of the other modules. Took it in the following Friday, they did it while I waited. Took about 2 hours. They updated both the HMI and USB modules. At first, it would work for a few seconds then go back to the home screen and the CarPlay icon changed back to Projection. I deleted the car from the phone and the phone from the car and it's now working without lockups, black screens or random drops.
The HMI is now on version 16.3B020. Wish the tech that saw it back in June last year would've just tried the software update. Unfortunately, the initial sale warranty had approved a part change which they still would have covered, but this was different so I had to pay it. Fortunately, $180 wasn't too bad.
