So I got a built engine and I was told to run break in oil 5w-30 conventional oil for about 3000-5000miles. Doesn’t seem right. First oil change I did at 500miles on the new engine. Now I’ve put on another 800 miles with break in oil. Would y’all recommend continuing to use break in oil or should I switch to full synthetic?
Mods are as follows for the engine itself:
-LME LT1 built bottom end.
-stage 2 boost cam
-katech oil pump
There is absolutely no reason to run the first fill that long! For example, the GM instructions that came with my E-ROD crate-engine specified oil & filter changes at 30-miles and 500-miles. And, there's no reason to use regular (non-synthetic) past 2000 miles. If it isn't "broken in" by 2K, or whatever they told you is happening over 3-5K miles, it's never going to be. Just my 2-cents. All the best.
people build engines pushing well in excess of 200 hp/litre, run them on the dyno once, change the oil, then track 'em.
ignore everyone who "has been doing it for decades" a certain way and that "worked for them" so therefore "it's the only way to do it" -- it straight up doesn't matter after ~30 miles.
