I had a 2015 7 speed and I absolutely loved the way Eco mode worked in it. When I was out on the highway and ready to set the cruise and use Eco mode, I changed the dial to Eco. I sold that car a while back and just bought an A8 2016 and I honestly thought Eco mode wasn't working correctly when it kicked in no matter what mode I was in. I did some searches and learned that Eco kicks in no matter what mode you are in on the A8 and the only way to stop it is to change to Manual mode and use the paddle shifters. I searched on here and further learned about the Range device, but I can't use it because my radar detector uses the OBD port. I don't want to get rid of Eco mode all together- I would like to make Eco mode on my A8 only work when the car is in Eco mode. Is that possible with a tuner?
If the answer above is Yes... any advice on finding a shop that can do this (I am in Columbus Ohio if that helps) would be really appreciated.
I am currently in the tuning phase of a Diablew tune. If you don't want to do that, you can buy just the tuner and use a canned tune. Most important question, do you have a warranty? If no, play ball. So far, so good. Just have to datalog the WOT run to get a final tune but no AFM.

No warranty remaining. So it is possible to have Eco mode work in just Eco mode and have it tuned out in Touring, Sport and Track? I don't really want to buy a tuner and do this myself as I don't think I would ever want to do anything other than what was mentioned in the original thread.

I believe so. I haven't tried it yet. Will let you know once I have. I have never done ECO.
Thanks for the reply Mike. I didn't even know there was an OBD splitter (LOL). Do you know if the Range device will allow AFM to work while in Eco Mode? When I read on the Range site, it doesn't sound like it would still allow Eco to work. That is part of the problem for me, I do like Eco mode.... I just want to control when I use it (by putting it in Eco mode).

A Range device will not let the vehicle go out of V8 mode. That's basically the purpose of it. You can always unplug it for a long trip.
What exactly would you gain by going to ECO mode? Besides the fact that it switches back and forth into V4 mode which you are trying to eliminate?
Miles per gallon. I don't like it outside of trips, but on long trips where you are on fairly flat ground with the cruise set for long periods of time.... it will absolutely get better mpg in eco mode.

I have not seen very much but I agree there is something.

As a real life case, I have a 2015 Sierra with AFM. When I drove from Houston to New Orleans, I got 24mpg. After I did the full delete, I made a 3 hour drive to Corpus and my mileage was just over 18. With and without the delete, my city mileage is the same. I bought a Range, but I was too late and shortly after I bought it, a lifter failed and wiped out my cam.

So you think AFM is worth 30% mpg? On the C7, I didn't even get 1 mpg difference cruising.

I can only communicate what my dash tells me. The Corpus drive from Houston is an easy drive. No traffic. No delays. Prett constant speed. I averaged 69 mph and had cruise set at 77.
The NOLA trip had more traffic and as I got closer, the mpg dropped significantly because of traffic. I may have pics of the mileage. I've done that in the past.

That could explain it. Also, the SUVs are like driving a brick compared to the C7 so maybe? Not saying you are wrong but maybe that's an explanation?

I live in Columbus, OH. The roads are pretty flat and I pretty much don't even notice when I transition from V8 to V4 in city traffic when in Columbus. This weekend, I was in a couple of small towns with hills everywhere at all times and I hated the sound of the transition from V8 to V4. It definitely didn't sound healthy for the car at all. I'm going to use M mode and use the paddle shifters from now on in those conditions. I may end up doing the Range device and unplugging it when I'm on a road trip that fits the conditions where I want to use Eco. But, I would LOVE to have my A8 work like my M7 did in that the only time it would transition was when ECO was selected. If that can be accomplished by a tuner... that is the route I want to go.

The common problem with the Range and tuning out AFM is that the inherently BAD lifters are still in the engine. I had a new cam and all regular lifters installed and the VLOM replaced with a plain pan.

What do you see as an mpg change? Engine sounds don't concern me as long as there are no shudders.
Yes, I know the tuner can accomplish it since I got it done. IIRC, Diablew gave me better throttle tip in. Can't say for sure since it is subjective. I believe he said that more than 30% increase would cause throttle control to reduce power.

I explored that end but I didn't want a lopey cam so it was stock profile if you want to do it.
