This a myth that keeps propagating. The factory setting is nowhere near the track setting. The camber settings from the factory are around -1.0 degrees plus or minus a 0.1 of a degree at all 4 wheels. The OM clearly states the camber track settings are -2.0 degrees plus or minus 0.6 of a degree. In practice track rats usually shoot for -2.2 camber in front and - 2.5 camber in the rear.
Yes, you can get better tire mileage by standing the tires up more but that doesn't mean the car has a track alignment coming from the factory. It just means the car is set up to give the owner that doesn't go to the track slicker handling when driving on the street. However, if you drive the car on the street like you drive a Tahoe you will never notice the reduction in handling that a tire mileage setting provides.
