Best advice I could offer is to remove anything that could hinder the easy removal of the transaxle which isn't easy to remove no matter how you start the procedure.
Why beat up a lot of other parts trying to wiggle or force your way past them?
You can do it just by removing the lower cover but frankly its just as easy to remove the entire rear bumper so you have more room to each side vs worrying about banging into the bumper cover. Takes 15-20 minutes to pull the lower rear cover or about 30 minutes to pull the whole thing. Not much of a difference for a job of that magnitude. Personally I like to have a lot of room so this would be an easy decision.
