Hello fellow corvette enthusiast . I recently bought a 2014 corvette stingray 7 speed manual. it has been my dream car. Unfortunately my American dream car has a differential that is toast. I need some advice on my options on this . Is it ok to buy used or just better to buy new . Thanks
What are the signs that your diff is toast? What happened?
whenever I would be cruising and I will get on the gas there seems to be like the transmission is skipping. And I can hear some knocking noise in the rear. I checked the the rear differential to see if there were any oil in there and when I pulled my pinky out the diff oil looks like silver metallic paint. I took it to a shop in Hendersonville that I found on here and he confirmed that there are excessive metal in the rear diff oil

In my experience all the diff's I've drained have had metal in the fluid unless the fluid is near new. Silver fluid in your diff is not a reason to replace the diff, but you should consider replacing the fluid. I think GM's interval is ~80k miles but as they underfilled the diff's in the first place it should probably be shorter.
Worn diff's whine (really worn diff's howl). But they don't 'knock" or "slip". If there are enough teeth missing or stripped to slip then it would likely be locked up solid or you'd hear some very disturbing grinding noises.
Maybe look for other culprits before going that route? What about worn transmission mounts, worn clutch, torque tube bushings coming apart, broken teeth in the transmission?
Pulling the cover off the diff to inspect it costs about $1000. At least do that before you decide to replace it. If you need to replace it then yes, get a new one. I had a new diff put into my 2014 stingray summer; $6k for a new one at the dealer including labor. Lucky you don't have the eLSD so the wait to get a diff shouldn't be excessive.

Your description doesn't sound like a diff issue. Slipping sounds more like an issue with the clutch. If you are driving in the higher gears and get on the throttle aggressively, a worn clutch may slip due to the high load passing through it. Doing the same thing while driving with the transmission set a gear or two lower, the clutch may not slip. Sometimes, clutches will slip and catch, depending on many factors.
Changing the clutch is about as bad as replacing the diff; the complete drivetrain from the engine back must be dropped although you may avoid paying several thousand for a new diff.

thank you for all of this information . I talked to the guy at shop and asked if he could inspect everything to just make sure that is our problem. I did find a new diff and they are $2,700 and the labor is $1,150. Hopefully it’s not as bad as I think it is. And also when I’m in 5 or 6 gears and push the gas considerably the engine light starts flashing and it doesn’t have any power really . I also thought maybe fuel pump

Which codes are stored?
(this reminds me a Cartalk episode where the guys can't figure something out and towards the end the caller said "do you think the CEL being lit has anything to do with this?")

Yea make sure they find the issue. It would be a shame to change the diff and drop $3850 for nothing and still have the same problem.
Hey! Where did you purchase your diff?? I can’t find one anywhere?
