Do you have a washable one like the K&N? Either way I'd take it out of the air box and visually inspect it. If washable, wash and oil it with the K&N service kit (with spray can oil). If it looks bad replace it. It's hard to put number like miles or years because it depends how dusty of conditions you drive in.
