Does anyone use a socket to remove and replace their WIX WL10290? If so can you tell me the part number and brand?
Thanks
I use that Wix filter for my LT4. I have a socket cap I bought a half dozen years ago but I do not have the original packaging. I hope this helps but this is what I see engraved on it: CTA ( brand??) “B” for size. That filter is 14 flute which is an important parameter.

CTA size A251 which is 76mm x 14 flutes. That size graving is a little hard to make out but googling and getting the CTA website shows A251 is a legitimate size and appears correct for that WIX filter.
Then don't screw it on to tight. Over tight is worse than not tight enough.
Exactly! I know that fast lube places and dealerships always like to put them on super tight because they are worried about leaks but they are doing more harm than good with this method. In all my years of doing oil changes (since 1986) I have always just tightened the oil filters by hand, and not even super tight, just lightly snug. I've not once had one leak, even ones that I felt afterwards as if I had barely tightened them enough.
Or you can just use this type of "grabber" wrench only to remove and then hand tighten. I have had a tough filter that a previous owner tightened and this got it off. The socket type are cool but they can damage the filter if it's really on there, and they can strip and get stuck. I never use a wrench to tighten a filter. About 3/4 of a turn once it contacts the mating surface and it's good to go.

I have never had an issue using the standard adjustable oil filter wrench you can pick up from any parts store. Not like it matters if you put some indentations or crush the casing a bit to loosen it up. I have also used my large claw pliers if I needed some extra squeezing power.
I purchased the 76mm x 14 flute size for the Wix 10290 and it’s the wrong size, too large.
74mm x 15 flutes is the correct size.
Referencing my earlier posts 2 & 3 here, the Wix WL10290XP is 14 flutes, not 15. I have several of those on my workbench and I just recounted the flutes to verify 14 is correct, not 15. The AC Delco PF64 is a 15-flute filter so a filter cap for a PF64 will not fit a WIX 10290. I also counted the flutes on my CTA Size A251 filter cap tool and it is also 14. It fits my WL10290XP filters perfectly. Also confirmed on the CTA manufacturers website: CTA Tools - A251 - Cap-Type Oil Filter Wrench - 76mm x 14 Flute — CTA Manufacturing
The CTA Size A251 is described as 76mm but whether 74 or 76mm is needed I am not so sure it matters. As I said before, it fits perfectly. I cannot speak for any other brand that might be listed as 76mm. An internet google AI search came up with a Lisle 74mm x 15 flutes but drilling down and found that it actually is listed as fitting a range of 74 to 76mm. But I do know that 15 flutes is wrong based on my half dozen years of experience with the 10290XP and the CTA 251 filter wrench cap.

The premium WIX 10290XP is 14 flutes. Sounds like your standard version 10290 is 15 flutes?? If so, I am surprised that the number of flutes are different for fundamentally the same dimensional filter housing for a WIX.
