I purchased a new uncut emergency backup metal key. Just the blank key that slides into the FOB. Besides the dealer, anybody find a place to cut this kind of key?
From memory I don't think anyone else can cut them. My local dealer parts guy said if I have a cut key he could use to copy from he'd cut it for free. That was pretty cool of him. Might call some dealers and see if they would do the same deal. Can't be very expensive even if they charge. When you call don't ask for service, go right to the parts counter.
The Ace hardware store said they can do it, but you have to purchase their GM FOB with key, $200+. I really don't get it, they said they couldn't cut my blank key because of liability. WHAT!

I can't buy a car key fob that easily either. I have to show proof of ownership. Title and license, etc.
Most locksmiths can duplicate - they usually want to supply the blank. There is an ebay vendor that will attempt to cut a key from pictures with or without the key code. I've been successful when I supply the key code.
The only time I needed proof of ownership was when I bought fob and cut key from a dealer for my 2014. The proof of ownership was to look up the code and cut the key. Other than that, you need the car, a key, and fob to add a fob so you already have possession of the car.
I just jumped off the bridge. I just purchased my own key cutter. I'll let you know how my new key cutting business goes.
Do you need a new key? Always good to get a little new key.
Epic failure trying to make a new emergency key. I destroyed 3 blank keys. TIHS!
Did the dealer cut the new key, how much did they charge for the cut?
Local Chevy dealers where I live will laser cut Corvette keys for free if you have an existing key And you bring your own uncut key for them to cut. For programming a fob they charge $185. That's if you have your own fob. I'm not sure how much they charge if they have to provide the key and the pop and the programming. But all cutting is free

That is pretty cheap for programming if it is the long way.
$185 to click a few buttons. Total screw job from the stealer, oops I mean dealer. I had the same experience with a different car at the dealer. They said a tech guy had to do it, and would take about 45 minutes. Total BS. I went home looked up the process, click click click, done, it was programed in 30 seconds. It takes way longer to cut a new key than program the FOB.

You can't do the long program in 30 seconds. I watched it done personally. All you can do is add a key. I which case you lose personalization.

Exactly what is the emergency key for? I take the key fob and put it in the pocket and take it back out when I am done. So unless I lose my pants, why would I need to have a spare metal key? My key goes from the key rac5to my pocket and back to the key rack. Unless I lose my pants, I should be fine.
Lets just say over a long weekend you decide to take your car for a drive. Click, click, your doors don't unlock. How do you get into your car? If the car battery or the fob batteries die, you are screwed. Unless you have a correct emergency key. Use it to open the rear hatch. It's the only way to get into your car. Also if the fob is in your car and things die, you are screwed. I just checked, I put one fob inside the car, locked the doors with the other fob, walked away with the other fob, the car will lock with a fob inside the car. So lets say, I then lost the fob outside the car. What would I have to do to get the car open? I have heard of dumber things happening.

Dude, how you going to get in if the battery dies? This is it. Gets you in the back, then pull the string to open front door. And battery is in back so change the battery and don't even need to get in front.

I don't follow. My key fob comes with the emergency key (we are talking about the metal blade key that opens the rear trunk), does it not? So if I lose that whole fob, I guess there is no getting into the car.
If you lose the fob and the blade key, the only hope is you have another blade key to get in and another key inside the car ready to go. Again, not sure how that would happen unless I took my pants off since the key is going to be in the pants pocket and not my jacket pocket.

But my point is that the blade key comes WITH the key fob for that reason. So why make another to get into the car. My key fob is on a colored keychain so I grab mine when leaving and it has the fob and the metal key blade. Why make yet another key blade?
This is what I am talking about. I have the keychain on the emergency or blade key and the blade key is locked in the fob. That entire package goes into my pocket when being used so unless I take my pants off and have to suddenly run, that key blade and fob is coming with me.

Actually its really easy to get a cut key only now, all you have to do is bring in the key you want to duplicate. No other proof needed.
I got one at Ace for my Bronco for my glove box and center console since I have "covers" on my fobs and I wanted a pure cut key to lock and unlock those when the door off.
To get a full fob is a bit more, but stand alone cut keys they just do. Same for your house, or whatever. Having a cut key for something inherently means you have access, they don't ask questions.

Also some people like to keep an extra cut key places. Its for obviously when your car battery dies, or if you disconnect it and then lock up the car manually.

Ace should have them, they won't look the same, but you just have to find a blank that has the same dimensions.
I got a "clone" no chip key for my Bronco from Ace. I had to go twice, the first time I talked to some "kid" who said, can't be done have to buy a whole fob. The next time I got an "older guy" who knew his stuff and he was like you just want the cut key right? Then he found a blank and cut it. You just need the right "clone" key. Most of the cut blanks for OEMs are actually the same dimensions.
