On the Bosch style injectors, I have had some varnish cleaned off the injectors at 100K. Wasn't a huge lot but still present. These are GDI injectors so I haven't done a clean and test yet. Maybe the best person to ask is Jon Banner from FIC? He services injectors so he might be able to tell you when to get them to do a cleaning and testing? It sprays the fuel into the cylinder so it isn't cleaning the valves.
As for additives, I haven't bothered to waste my money on it. More enjoyable to buy a Trenta sized Starbucks.
