I am not really going to put in a guess until I see finally specs but part of the problem with Ring times is what test method are they going to use? Are they going to do only 1 or 2 timed laps like they did the last time they had the ZR1 and Z06 at the Ring or are they going to rent the track and spend days of doing timed laps like Nissan does for the GT-R? Your fooling yourself if you don't think this makes a difference in lap times.
So does the driver. Johnny Oconnell made the comment that Chevrolet should throw him into the car instead of Jim Mero, and he's probably right. Mero is no doubt an outstanding driver, but I'm sure they are leaving time on the table.
What are your predictions for C7Z06 laps at the 'Ring.
The wilder-than-wild Porsche 918 hybrid did a 6:57 lap. The ZR1 did a 7:19.63.
I am going to say the new Z06 will run 7:10 or better....
not a chance in hell.
there was 3 sec split between the z06/zr1 back then, thats accounting for more hp and better brakes. Bet it runs 7:19-7:18....
I agree would be nice to see the base 7's time... must not have been that great or perhaps the 75k camaro was as fast or faster...

I agree with you, if they are going to rent the track and give a driver like O'connell or Magnasun time to get use to the car. These guys are use to driving with race slicks and heavy down force and it takes time to adjust. For the testing method they have been using lately, limited timed laps, Mero is the better choice.
I was going to say I am more interested in seeing what time Mero can do at VIR, but they are currently reapaving and widening the track so who knows how that is going to effect lap times for comparison sake. It is likely to get a little faster.

You have to remember that the Ring is a 14 mile course. It's going to be faster than the ZR1. If you figure it's even 1 - 1.5 seconds faster around a track like Laguna Seca, which takes the ZR1 about a minute and a half to lap, when you magnify that improvement over an extremely dynamic 14 mile course, it can easily add up to 10 - 15 seconds. On a short course, the gap isn't as apparent.
We've already seen the test mules with ceramic brakes and we already see rocker panels on the teaser shots, so its going to have ZR1 goodies right away. With a superior chassis and likely better down force, 7:10 or better should be very doable. I predict 7:05 - 7:10.
Next Monday they finally announce the Z51 times and they are, by all standards, GREAT. They then say and HERE are the Z06 times (secret testing already done) and they are WAAAAY better. Now THAT'S showmanship!!!

I'm guessing Z51 is 7:25-7:30 and the Z06 is 7:00-7:10. I have no doubt they've done the testing already. Now how "stock" they are is open to question - there are a lot of ways to make a car lighter, and the Ring is really, after all, a handling track.
The Porsche 908/3 of yore made it around in less than 6:30 with only 360 HP, and low tech - faster than the hypertech Porsche 918, but it weighed less than 1200 lbs. I'm guessing if anyone is fibbing (Nissan ??), its on weight. A carbon or a fiberglass body on a "birdcage" spaceframe can look just like the real deal and weigh half as much.
I don't think the Z51 time will be that fast. I'm guessing 7:35. It's not nearly as fast as the Z07 edition that lapped in 7:22. The Z06 has somewhere near 200 more hp, so I'm going with 7:14. If they would put some real aero on it, 7:05.

It is possible that Mero is absolutely the fastest driver on the planet in a stock Corvette, but I doubt it. Many years ago, a car magazine took Al Unser Jr. and had him repeat the performance tests they had just done on some production car. He beat ALL the results that they had established - acceleration, skid pad, slalom, braking - by a substantial margin. His racing background was in 800 hp winged Indy cars.
There is a reason these guys end up in these jobs besides their good looks. But maybe you're right in that at least they can say that the resulting lap time wasn't because they had a ringer in the driver's seat.
