Because it physically won't fit.
To make a front engine, rear transmission car awd, you'd have to do what GTR does and run a second shaft back up to the front. But our low slang body style simply don't have to room; you'd up with with a Vette having the proportions of the GTR.
The other radical choice is to do what Ferrari did and put a mini transmission at the front crank pulley, and drive the front wheels that way. Again, no space.
