A8 Shift Delay?
When you're hard on the throttle and driving aggressively, it's very quick and sharp on upshifts. While downshifts are fast, they don't feel like the gear is immediately locking in. At slower speeds, downshifts can produce a jerky rev match and upshifts are just too lazy. If they didn't say it was as good as PDK, there wouldn't really be any disappointment. It's like saying you're as good as Pete Sampras but you're really as good as Andre Agassi.

The automatic transmission is also far better on track, especially if you just leave it in D (I know, heresy blah blah blah). It's smart and learns exactly what you need (I'm driving in D in the video below). It also has closer ratios than the seven speed manual, which means you hit higher speeds and are always running about 600 RPM higher. That means more power. More power is more good. The manual is still a great transmission though, shifts are direct and the gates are well defined. Active rev match is still a gimmick, though it has been improved for the Z06. Thankfully, the pedals are well placed for heel toe, so just do that instead.
Edit: I know the A8 is not dual clutch, but saying it's as good as the PDK might be misleading.

They did make certain specific claims however:

Check the NOTE: "Total time is from shift initiation until final gear acceleration is reached."
Paddle (tap mode) is also shown on the far right.

Edit: I'll have to find out whether the Z's A8 will be different in performance than the standard car, since I think these benchmarks and the gm authority review covers the non-Z06 Stingray.

I love that
Doesn't matter that left to its own devices the z06 with the 8l90 will crush the performance of any Porsche PDK under 100 grand....if not even the almighty Porsche turbo PDK S.....and possibly even the relatively stripped hard core GT3 ...
I'd pay good money to read the gm press release that stated the 8L90 blows in comparison to the 150 grand porche turbo PDK....even though both are faster when left in drive and the driver leaves his mitts off the flappy paddles...

Call me whatever you want, flame me if it makes you feel better, but I will say this: based on what I’ve seen out here in the streets “thus far” with current stock customers C7Z vs. friends who own other makes/models from the competition – GM somewhat over hyped this thing.

Gosh, what else with this thing….I mean, it pisses me off because there was so much hope for this new platform (stock wise); surely we can mod, and surely the car is much better than the C6 in many areas, but man it is one thing or another. Regarding the trans, I thought it was the car, but now I guess I was not crazy. You see, two weeks ago we test drove a nicely equipped Z51 A8 for the wife, I was not impressed with the trans it all!
I said to myself that surely the Z06 will be better, and now this article. Yeah it's only one article, but it hits me home because it somewhat echoes what I experienced during our test drive. Matters got even worse after we test drove a PDK equipped 911 C2S. That trans really impressed me, however, the wife was not too crazy with the overall looks of the vehicle, so out was that idea.

Nevertheless, time will tell how the A8 in the Z will really behave once in the streets with real people under real everyday driving and racing scenarios. For now though, I am not buying into any other GM marketing crap regarding the new 2015 Z06. I believe the stock TM settings is one of the many attributes contributing to the somewhat sloppier that anticipated A8 behavior...same as the previous trans. Sure, folks like me can easily tune out and/or adjust parameters to improve matters, but what if you do not want a tune?

Not being a “negative Nancy”, but as many of you who knows me know…I’ll tell it like it is. So far this new Z has me questioning my ordering decision...oh well. I have a customer car now (an M7) – the thing looks so pretty and shiny with only 288 miles; man I just wish the thing ran like a looks and like a TRUE 650HP car should, especially vs. its competitors. Oh well, I’ll be playing with it all next week.

Thanks,
Carlos
The A8 in the Z06 has been tested:

Go out and test drive a Porsche PDK, or AMG MCT or even the 7G Tronic and/or the BMW DCT trans...I think you'll see what I mean. I believe my old 2010 AMG 7G trans shifted and behaved better than the A8 Z51 we tested.

The C7Z A8 delivery delays had me thinking, but I went ahead and ordered it anyway. I hope GM figured it out.

Thanks,
Carlos
