Z06 motor went kaboom today -:(
Roll/drag racing with my buddy today and unfortunately for him his z06 went up in smoke. We had been doing launch starts and his a8 was handling me in my zr1 fairly well so I opted for some roll racing and that is when his motor let go.
We think we were going around 160 mph when it happened.... I was ahead by a car length or so and he said he heard a big boom and oil out the bottom. Towed car back to his house and he will bring to dealer this week. He doesn't have a lift so we did not inspect and my buddy was a little bummed as one could imagine.
My question is really whether or not gm should have released this as a "race/track" car if it really can't do either without likely hood of blowing up?

Scraping the splitter.
There will inevitably be a number of people who post ITT claiming that the Z06 has a high number of engine failures. So this is relevant.
Some data about engine failure rates:
http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-new...#ixzz2IhIaAMyJ
http://www.warrantydirect.co.uk/press269.html
It's a few years old, but interesting data.
GM built 8,653 '15 Z06's and they have probably built an additional ~2k '16 Z06's. Figure there are ~9500 cars in customer hands since September 2014 when deliveries started.
There have been...what...half a dozen engine failures reported on this forum?
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...e-post-up.html
So take that number and multiply it by 10 for 60 failures out of ~9500 cars. That's a .63% failure rate, or 1 out of 159 cars, putting it at #3 on the above linked list, only behind Honda and Toyota with an engine making 650 horsepower.
That should put it in perspective.

Why? 9000 Z06s and how many engines have failed? These things happen and warranty is there. It doesnt matter if its a Hellcat, Viper, 911 ect all have blown engines here and there and it happens all the time in the car world. Even the GT3 is having failed engines again. Its sucks for the owner when... but it happens

Le Mans Master
so the ZR1 was ahead by a car? Thought it would be a little more

Guys, you can buy the most expensive _anything_ and a few will break here and there.
Frankly I wish mine would blow up - then I could get chevy to buy back and buy a Z07

I can go on and on. This is precisely what warranty are for. Now the big question is how GM handled the claim. And had he modified it?
This probably $40m engine failed too.

I have already learned to ignore about 80% of posts in this forum. People are people and throw in competitive fast cars and that can make some people "not so good"
I find enough good quality useful information to suit my needs and have learned a lot about the car.
It's almost "D" Day for my car so Im getting excited.
Sorry for your friend blowing up his car. 160MPH your taking that risk. I hope he can get some warranty work out of it in the end.
