Default M7 regrets

Hi guys,

I'm getting pretty close to putting in my order for a Z and I'm really struggling over the tranny. I love sticks and my father had a 15 C7 M7 that car was a blast to drive with the rev match feature.

He traded to a Z A8 and while obviously that tranny is awesome and the cars a blast to drive and faster I still feel that I may miss the stick.

How are you M7 owners feeling about your decision?

Also have any of you drove the Z in both options. I've only driven a A8 Z so I'm just curious?

does it bother you knowing you could have a faster car with just changing Transmission choices?

This car will be mostly street driven I don't deal with a lot of traffic where I live and I do plan to track it 3-4 times a year if that helps give you all a better idea of how I'm using it.

I am feeling real good about it.
If you enjoy a stick then you wont have any regrets with the M7.

Exactly this.

I'm about 45, not 17 anymore and I rarely ever have the urge to race anyone on the street. So, someone with an automatic and just putting the pedal down can be faster if they want, I could not care less.

I've always preferred manual transmissions and find them...... fun to drive, where automatics are much less fun for me.

You're choice, but I've never had to ask this question if a manual transmission was available in the vehicle I was looking at.

M7 for me, but I really enjoy stick shifts.

You need to get what you what, not what other folks like. Sounds like you'd prefer the M7 based on your post.

Love mine. Most when they ask and I say it's stick, nod their head in approval. To me it's more like a 4-speed with a few extra gears for the highway. Basic H pattern that clicks in nicely. Clutch is not hard at all which is a big plus and the hill assist is the cats meow.

The problem is I don't know what I want. The M7 is no doubt a blast in a C7 I can't even imagine it with the added power. But I also don't want to get myself in a position where I think to myself "Damn If I only had the A8 I would of taken that guy" Then again I don't come across supercars on the freeway to often with the nerve to race. Well I'm definitely leaning the M7 way.

Any of you M7 owners have any clutch/tranny issues?

Have 15,000 on my M7. Popped out of 1st on occasion, but was easily adjusted by the dealer. No issues. Also drive the M7 through tons of traffic in the NE and it's never a chore. Never wish I had an automatic. Truly a matter of taste and preference. World is moving to autos, so perhaps an M7 will become less common in the future!

Went through the same anguish before settling on a stick. My basis for wanting the A8 was I can pretty much guarantee a 3.0sec 0-60 without much technique. Not so much the street racing because that just doesn't happen as much anymore nor do I feel inclined to do so.

But I have 2 daily drivers that are automatics so why not have a manual? I drove a Z06 M7 and a Stingray A8. If the A8 was anything like my AMG transmission I would have probably gone with it. Unfortunately, I am a paddle guy and it was not quick enough for me in that mode, but excellent at WOT.

Ultimately , an M7 in a car of this calibre is pretty much unheard of anymore. Buck the trend and enjoy what is most likely a dying option.

I agree with the M7. Have a 2007 Z06 w/M6 and love it. Just got a 2016 w/M7 on 12/4 and loving it too even though less than a 100 miles so far. Need to update my photo!

I drove both when I was looking------if it were me...........if I had to deal with a lot of stop-and-go traffic, I would lean toward the automatic. And, if that were the case, I am not sure I would have purchased my 'toy' sports car.

My daily driver is an automatic, and the main reason I have owned corvettes is to drive a 'fun' car and have 'fun' while doing so-----for me that means driving a standard. If they only made automatics I would probably be a boat owner instead.

As for one being faster than the other....while I love a spirited drive and cruise with my friends (1) I am not that good of a driver to get either one to the times they post in the magazines anyway, and (2) the older I get the less likely I am to be concerned about the 'other' car pulling up along side of me and wanting to race, etc-----I have seen too many young guns lose control of their cars or nearly hitting someone when street racing, etc.,--------I would be a mess if I was racing one of these individuals and they lost control or did something crazy (recklessly cutting someone off while shifting lanes, etc.), and someone got injured or killed (plus, as a participant in the race, I would liable as well).

And then, many of the folks in my corvette club have automatics and love them. Many are older and have leg or back problems that inhibits the use of their left leg; and some just never cared to learn to drive a stick; and others just prefer the automatic. It is all good.

It really comes down to what flavor ice cream do you think is best-----no universal answer fits everyone.

I;m able to still drive a stick and that may not always be the case. That and to save $3K the M7 works for me.

the M7 does seem to be the Badass dying trend that would be cool to say you opted for!

That rev match just sounds so awesome when the exhaust is fully opened

Another factor to consider is the cost. An A8 is going to cost about $3K more than the M7.

I need to say it - it sounds like you are still at an age where you are looking to "beat the guy" rather than enjoy the car. It is hard for me to identify with that motive (applicable to teenagers and protracted adolescents, unless on a race track?). I like driving an A8 more than an M7 because I don't like to have to keep my foot on a clutch when in traffic. Also, the "automatic" goes through the gears quickly and if I get "bored" there is always the paddle shifts. Those who chose a M7 will likley favor them and those who chose an A8 the same. Best

The M7 is worth it just to avoid all the rolling eyes you would get with the A8.

Thats one thing the A8 guys wont tell you about...all the disappointing looks they get from people when they tell them "no i didnt get the stick".
