I have both. I drive the Vette about 3/1 over the Camaro. Love the seats in the Camaro but the visibility issues just don't go away. You've had a newer Camaro so maybe u don't mind. I do. GL either way. Both badass cars, no doubt.
Another thing to consider is the ZL1 has the A10 transmission. I don't know if its too early to render a verdict on it but the A8 in the Z06 has been a source of problems for many people.
Funny, I've agonized over this same decision for months and just recently decided to purchase a z06.
I currently own a 2011 Camaro 2SS/RS convertible and wanted to upgrade this year as it is my 50th birthday. I was thinking that it would be cool to get a 2017 ZL1 as it is the 50th anniversary of the Camaro and my 50th as well. Plus I had a 73 Camaro for my first car.
I went and test drove a ZL1 and loved it, I was ready to buy. Then just for kicks I test drove a Z06 and it blew me away. These are two very different cars even though they share many of the same parts. The Z06 is a sports car, smaller and more nimble. The ZL1 is a muscle car, it feels bigger to drive.
I plan to take the car to the track and so I purchased (just ordered it last week actually) a z06 with the z07 package. There is a really big difference in price between the two cars when you load up the z06 with options. Sticker on my z06 was about $106k and you can get a loaded ZL1 for about $65k. So price was a big decision point.
Anyway, long story short, after agonizing and weighing all the numbers and stuff, it boiled down to which car I really wanted more. I had to buy what I really wanted otherwise I would regret the purchase every time I saw the other car on the road.
The biggest deciding factor for me was actually the removable roof on the Z06. I live in SoCal and like my convertible. But you can't drive a convertible on many track days unless you put in a roll bar. With the Z06 it is like having the best of both worlds, I can take the top off for a Sunday drive on PCH, or leave the top on for a track day at Willow Springs.
Another thing to consider is the ZL1 has the A10 transmission. I don't know if its too early to render a verdict on it but the A8 in the Z06 has been a source of problems for many people.
Not sure I'd go so far as to say that the C7Z's A8 has been a problem "for many people" ... but if OP wants to track his car regularly, he's definitely better off in an M7.
For the number of years GM has been making the A8 it is far from being reliable or bulletproof. Remember the A8 is used in many GM vehicles. Don't know what the OP purchased but if he bought the A8 for tracking we will be hearing from him. If he bought the M7 he will probably be fine.
