Battery replacement

Here is a PDF with lots of pics of my install. Not as easy as many but watch for the few tricks: http://netwelding.com/Battery_Issues.pdf
I bought a Sears AGM for <$150. Same battery is sold by Advanced Auto and Autozone under their name. It has ~20% more capacity. It also has handles a big help it putting the new one on.
There are only a few battery manufacturers. Johnson Controls is one of the biggest. They bought Optima ~10 years ago as well. Have toured their battery mfg factory in town aand saw over 20 lables being puton at the end of the line.
Also toured their only battery reclamation plant the crushes and recovers acid, plastic and lead from ~1600 crushed car batteries per hour! They recover and refine over 98% of all the battery parts and the resultant product shipped to their battery manufacturing plants.

Same thing, battery started to fail shortly after the 2nd year. Then instead of me taking it out to salvage it before i traded the car, i just gave the battery with the car for the trade in lol
The battery in my Z seems to be getting weak, or although i think because it had a bit of trouble cranking that one time when it was really cold so we're approaching 3 years anyway so i might just get a new battery in spring so i don't have to worry about it.
I'll probably go with a duralast platinum as well. Those are actually good batteries.

Johnson Controls is a first class very large company and one of the leaders in battery mfg. They bought Optima about 10 years ago and moved manufacturing to Mexico, as I recall. There were battery quality issues reported at that time.
I just changed the ~10 year old Yellow Top in my Street Rod. Since I built a custom hold-down that fit their round cells wanted another. I called Jegs and Summit who I have bought many parts from for my Rod and who have excellent tech support and sell Optima batteries. One tech knew of the old problem and said has not been an issue in the past 5+years. The other, who sounded younger never heard about the issue. I bought another Yellow Top.
In fairness to the 10 year battery life on got on that Yellow Top in my Street Rod, it’s on a charger 24/7 unless it is at a car show. But like many things in life, screw-up once and that reputation will follow you forever!
That said the top shape of the Optima will not fit a C7! It has to hold the powerboard connected to the positive terminal and that requires that terminal to be on one side and recessed. An Optima tech who posts on the Forum said they now have one with that configuration, shown at SEMA in November but it is not yet available! Optima is an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery.
The AGM Diehard I used has 20% more capacity than the OEM. It's made by Johnson Controls as is the same one sold in our area under their battery name by AutoZone and Advanced Auto (and probably more folks depending on your location.) Wait for a sale and it's ~$125! If you don't know what an AGM battery is, suggest googling for the benefits.
PS: As expected from our tour of a Johnson Controls battery plant, just found this:
"batteries are manufactured by Johnson Controls, which also manufacture Diehard, Duralast, Varta, AC Delco, as well as 20 other brands."
At the end of our plant tour we saw folks with over 20 labels being put on batteries as they came down the line! They ship on a Just-In-Time basis, so if a retailer sells one model it's replaced on the next delivery!

Fun History. When I got my September 2013 built C7 the Owner's Manual, in the front intro section said you could jump the car from under the hood. It then referred to a section in the back. That section said nothing about jumping from the engine compartment only from the battery. Folks were saying you could use the threaded rod that has the power from the battery that powers the front fuse panel and any metal for a ground. I looked at the wire size bring power from the battery and it was ~1/3 the size that I used on my street rod that has it's battery, like the C7, in the far right corner of my '34 sedan. I calculated the wire size based on the several hindered amps used when starting.
I sent a PM to the GM customer service reps who were on the Forum every day when the C7 was first introduced and for about a year there after. I asked if the Owner's Manual was right and was told their "sources" said yes. I then asked where in the engine compartment were we supposed to jump start? After several PMs to the same customer rep, got a PM that said, "Can't get an answer from my "technical sources!"
Bottom Line: Future C7 Owner's Manuals were changed and no longer incorrectly state anything about jumping from the engine compartment! That threaded post suppling power to the front fuse panel is fine for powering lower current draw devices BUT not a several hundred amp starter motor.

Even the AGM I installed had place for a hose on both sides. The removed hose end fitting pushed into the new battery.

Sort of reminds me of a Consumer Reports Article from 53 years ago. They were testing clock radios at the time and claimed that one was a cheap copy of the other. Somebody dug up the model number and serial number information for each and found both radios had been built on the same assembly line on the same day and the only difference was the plastic case and labels. All other parts were the same.
