Yes, I searched. Yes, I read. No, I didn't find a solid answer.
Local dealer says the UPF64R is a "better" filter with "better" materials than the PF64. My searches show the UPF64R has the 22psi bypass like the PF64. Compatibility searches show it works for the C7 Z06.
Well...is it better and correct? Anyone running it?
The only dumb thing is the grumpy people that lecture everyone for asking questions that were asked before. There is so much info out there that just "doing your research" is not a viable way to address a problem or question. Also, things change with time, like engine oil 5w30 versus 0w40 recommendations.
Anyhow, this oil filter thing just doesn't make sense to me. The dealer seems to think this filter is top of the line, but it is a bit confusion when I flip through older posts.
And besides...Derek was right, that center should be at LEAST three times that size...
So, what I gather is the UPF64R IS a better filter, and therefore does not provide the necessary flow the LT4 requires...or am I just not getting this?

PF 64 is the right filter for your Z06. I have used it from the beginning on my 2016 Z. I did the research you are doing presently when I first bought mine new in June of 2016 and came to the conclusion it flowed and filtered as it should. 9.8 Quarts Mobil 1 5W 30. I know we can overthink these things. 3 years with mine and it's running fine
Agree, total over think. I use to chase that whole more filter media must be better game. If you’re changing your oil every 5K miles.....well you know the rest of that story.
The discussion gentlemen is about oil filters not airfilters. The BMS unit is the air filter aftermarket product. To the OP, do yourself a favor and get the filter the manual specifies. Dealer advice is only as good as those giving it and many are well meaning but often not well informed.

Thanks Doc, but we already determined that. Read the above posts.
2019 OM still says PF64. However, those manuals were set in stone a long time ago and in the interim GM Service may have sent a TSB to dealerships informing them the UPF64R may be an acceptable or maybe better alternative given it might fit more vehicles and cut down on inventory costs.
So which one did you or are you going with? I am planning on changing my oil and filter this week. I ordered a UPF64R on amazon. Like you I've been doing research but it is confusing to me also. A lot of different opinions. I did see a SB that says don't use the UPF48R that I ran on my 11 GS on LT4. I have about 3 of them left but not going to run it on my 16 Z. Guess I'm going to give them to a friend who has a C6.
UPF64R is the 2nd gen Volt filter. The LT1/4/5 requires more oil flow than that 1.5L engine so proceed with caution (note how much smaller the drainback holes are). The Volt filters are very heavy duty construction since they're designed for extended oil soak (2-year drain intervals).
