Default Stalling ....

Parked the Beast couple months ago with full tank of gas. Went out yesterday to take it out for a spin. Fired right up with the usual "wake the neighbor up" roar. Let it idle while gathering up some items I wanted to take with me.

Car sputtered a few times, then stalled. Started right up again, idled good for a minute or so then stalled out. Engine revs would drop then raise, then drop then raise then die on me. Don't have any trouble starting but same thing happens. No Check Engine light or code.

I've had the car sit much longer than that without having an issue. It's a 2016 with about 7200 miles on it.

Gas gone bad? If put in some Octane booster and injector cleaner think I could keep it running and take a long drive to burn off the tank?

Thanks...

I would suspect a vacuum leak right off hand. Might check all the vacuum lines, around throttle body area, and possibly air intake coupler to TB. Last ones not a vacuum leak but is metered air coming in.

If vacuum leak, would it throw a code? Nothing is showing, check engine light is not on.

I would think that bad gas is the problem, probably has moisture, condensation in it. May clear out with driving it some, if not, like you said, put some sort of fuel treatment in it.

Where I live rodents are aggressive. Anything that sits over night can be a target and you just never know what component on the vehicle they will attack. Had knock sensors chewed on a tundra and o2 sensor on MB and the ecm wires on my truck and camper brake lights etc. I despise those little creatures.

Had a critter chew out my main wire harness on my 2011 GS, only had 600 miles on the car and had to put over $2000 into a new harness. But I know they got into it while it was in a parking lot and rode home with me. Next morning I opened the door to the garage and found little pieces of black wiring all over my garage floor, along with lots of little critter turds!

I've checked under the car and don't see anything on the garage floor so pretty sure it isn't electrical related.

You may need to put some dry gas in the tank. That sometimes resolves issues with bad gas since it absorbs moisture in the tank. Just make sure whatever product you choose is compatible with modern fuel systems. With the C7 fuel system, the driver's side tank is filled first, followed by the passenger side tank. However, when the fuel is drawn from the tank it is first drawn from the passenger side tank. That means when you put in additives the mix with the fuel depends on when you put them in. If you added them when the tank was empty and then filled the tank the additives are all in the driver's side tank with none in the passenger side tank. Adding after the tank is more than half full means all of the additives are in the passenger side tank. Putting in half the amount of the additives when tank is below half full and then adding the rest when the tank is above half full will distribute the additives equally in the fuel.

Default Reconsidering the problem

Has anyone had an electrical short occur in their C7?

The night before I started to have the stalling issues there was a very strong odor in the garage, smelt like an electrical short of some sort. Since I have four vehicles all connected to battery tenders I immediately unplugged them all thinking must be one of the tenders shorting out.

I've since plugged them all back in, one at a time over several hours, and no smell. Beginning to wonder if the smell wasn't something shorting out in Beast.

I started it up again yesterday and if I kept the revs up around 1500, it seemed to run okay. When I let it back down to idle, it stalled after a minute or so. Cranked over a couple of seconds then fired right back up. Kept it running for about 5 minutes at about 1500 RPM then let it back down to idle. It idled for another 5 minutes before I shut it off.

Going to try and take it out on the road, see how it responds and hopefully put a hundred or so miles on it before taking it over to top off the tank.

So curious if anyone has had or knows of an issue with electrical shorts in the C7's.

Thanks again for any input!

Have you checked the running voltage on your battery/system?

Could be a marginal alternator. If the battery is original, it should probably be replaced (or at least load tested).

My mother-in-law's car just had what I thought was a bad battery - ended up being an alternator (and the battery was weak, so I replaced it too). Her car would start and run at above idle RPM, but stall at idle.

Easy to check and not too hard to fix if that is the problem.

Yep - about 3-4 years on an OEM battery is about normal any more.

Fill it up with new gas & a bottle of techron / seafoam. Do an Italian tuneup I bet it's fine. A bad battery will not cause an already started & idling car to die.... Same with a vac leak, it would misbehave immediately. Trying to burn a puddle of water, well, the engine will suffer.

Think my "Italian tune-up" did the trick.... managed to get a bottle of Lucas Octane boost and Fuel injector cleaner into the Beast. Let it sit for a day then cranked it up, let it idle for a while then backed it out and took it out on the highway, performed like the Beast of old!

Even though the gas in the tank wasn't all that old I suspect that was the issue..
