Does anyone know why they had this engine exchange back in 2015

To me it seems as though it was used if something failed so that GM could understand what failed, why it failed, and how to improve it in the future.

When I read it, it sounds like they needed long term data on how the engine was holding up. I would be curious to know how many were exchanged...likely only a handful.

It establishes a different method of routing the failed part back to GM. It is sent to a specific group Vs just sent back to SPO. That specific group may be in power train engineering. That way you have the correct people doing a failure analysis and more than likely better able to determine what changes need to be made and more capable of implementing changes quickly.
