This is what happens when engineers and designers run out of ideas... have to keep churning out work product. Not all ideas are good ones.

Also, oft times engineering departments will patent novel ideas and not use them just to keep the competition from using them. Many patents floating around are just preventative measures against competition. I know, because I do it too hahaha.
