Not crazy about the vertical wall on the console but will hold judgement until I see it in person. One thing i'm pretty sure of with all that leather that is not the interior of a 60K car.

The cover is probably to prevent accidentally changing the mode with a bump of the dial. My Mercedes dial is always getting changed because of bumping it, but the last loaner I got had a cover like shown in photo

I think I finally figured out where the HVAC comes out. See that satin metallic strip that runs across the lower third of the steering wheel? See those centered little *****, one on either side? That’s two very long, very narrow air vents. Almost stealth-like. Nice! No more array of binnacle protrusions.

I believe these buttons and the Mode are strategically place to prevent accidental activation. With that I think we're looking at.
Left - Stabilitrack
Center - Front end lift
Right - ??? Roof activation switch OR a 360 camera view for parking ???

Is it the camera angle or is the top half of the steering wheel appear to have a larger radius tan the lower half..
its like the brainiac of steering wheels.
hopefully its the angle of the camera.
not a deal killer but a bit weird

That is the HVAC directional manipulator control I just mentioned. You can see it's mate on the other side of the steering wheel, just above that CarScoops logo.

The angle and distortion in these photos are why you don’t like the wheel or think the “wall” is awkward or too big. Both will appear to look much better on the 18th and when you finally sit in the car.

I want to hear the story behind that steering wheel

Well... I plan on nice weather dailying the car. So every time I back it out of my garage or a parking spot it I pull that thing up for reverse. I'd have preferred push buttons for all of them, but they probably varied them so the user has less of a chance to make a mistake selection i.e. the early Jeeps where people couldn't tell if they were in park and that Star Trek actor got run over by his own Jeep. I wonder if there's some kind of mechanical override for towing the car i.e. something fails you pop a cover and can get it in neutral? Regardless... just the musings of an analyst, not a criticism of the car.

So the vent is coming from below the infotainment screen. I like it... No point in the vents being obnoxiously large or distracting if they can be integrated into the design.
