Default C8 and GM service

Everyone pause for a moment after today's launch of the C8. What was your last dealership experience with your current corvette? Mine not so pleasant. Unless GM has regional service centers specifically for the new C8, your leaving your super car in the hands of a dealership like mine that quoted me a price for an alignment for a 12 or newer C7 ($300) because my 05' ($69.95 )according to them looked so new !

I have always turned my own wrenches and will with this car too. Nothing says satisfaction like doing it yourself and you have the added bonus of knowing the job was done right.

They left my oil dipstick out and apologized via e-mail. Service will still suck when compared to other high end manufacturers.

Quality service for the C8 ME will be a problem at most Chevy dealerships. Hell, many still can't do an FE oil change correctly on a dry sump.

I wonder how many techs will be qualified to work on these cars?

I will not buy another Chevy product because of the crappy dealer service. Had a known issue with my C6, if I remember correctly, something about a cable over the steering column that was too short and would cause a light to come on. I made an appointment told them I could wait for the car if it was quick, and I when I got there, on-time, and asked how long the repair would take, I was told that the appointment was just to drop the car off and they didn't know when they would get to it.

Since it was warranty work, I asked for a loaner, and they said they couldn't authorize it until the looked at the car and diagnosed the problem. If I wanted to get a rental, if it turned out to be warranty work, and would take more than the allotted warranty time (I think it was 2 hours of standard labor), they would pay for the rental, if not it was on me. I had to get to work, so I had no choice. They took me to the rental car place, 10 minutes away, I rented a car, and by the time I got to work, the service advisor called and told me that my car was ready...this was less than 1 hour from when I dropped it off, so I knew he was screwing with me when he said they didn't know when they could get to it. So, they did not cover the rental car, so I was out of pocked for about $50 for warranty work that took less than an hour.

Now I have a Lexus, I drive in, they do a bit of paperwork on the repair, hand me keys to a loaner (no paperwork for that), and I'm on my way in 10 minutes...no charge, no going to a separate rental company etc.

Dose of Reality time -- There will be NO regional service centers specifically for the C8 owner. Forget about that dream -- it isn't happening. GM just cannot afford such a high expense for a low volume, low price car.

You know that "cheap" C8 MSRP we're all talking about? It comes at a price.

GM isn't doing the Lexus pricing model where they sell a $40,000 car for $50,000 and put the excess into a superb Customer Service experience.

Let us know how that works out when the electrical TSB's and warranty issues come flooding in on first year model. I have an 05 and I am still reading.

Fact is the first year of the C7 was TROUBLE FREE....I believe the C8 is the most tested Corvette EVER...I doubt they will have problems....But of course this just MY opinion.

The C8 isn't a supercar, it is a relatively cheap Chevy sportscar and the service is commensurate.

Some C7 owners are still having issues withe Chevy dealers when it comes to an oil change. C8 is beautiful and I want one but getting basic service is a worry.

Porsche owners don’t fear going to the dealer for service (well maybe the cost). The difference is the service tech at Chevy is doing an oil change on a Cruz and than a C7 and soon to be C8.

GM service will be the worst part of owning this car.

Did they say why the alignment was so expensive? Im the alignment tech at our dealership and the C7s are probably the easiest GM vehicle to align. All the adjustment cams are on the bottom arms for caster and camber. $300 for an alignment is a rip off.

The service rep said 2012- up used special "tools". I didn't argue as my last alignment was in the $70 range, just told them to give me my car back.

Been doing just fine for 30 years now. I see no reason this should be any different. Speaking as a mechanical engineer with going on 35 years experience, all cars, even fancy sports cars, are just mechanical devices nothing more. There is absolutely nothing magical about them. As long as you have the correct tools and a good shop manual you can do anything the GM tech can. But you will have the advantage of actually caring that the job is done right.

He was talking out of his ***. The 2014, C7 has a rear caster adjustment in the alignment process. Its not actually caster like the front because they dont steer. What you are doing is making sure that both rear knuckles are rotated at the same angle so bump steer is the same on both sides. 2012 and 2013 did not have that. Its a matter of taking three minutes to stick the tool on and check the reading and then adjust as needed. If they are charging that much extra, They are ripping people off because they dont know any better. Id call them out on it but thats just me.

Oh my gawd, you are so right there. Dry sump, wet sump, they scratch their head. Traditionally the new kids coming in or the old farts there that can't change a tire do the oil changes, that work is beneath some of the experienced techs. That's why I watched, but that was only during the free oil changes, now, I do home.
