The TRUE waiting list at your dealer...
I am curious to what you guys think the "true" percentage of buyers are on your dealers waiting list?
I was talking to my guy at my dealer and he told me the following:
* Many were on the list before the car was ever revealed and they did not require a deposit back then
* Reveal had GM website to conveniently reserve a car for $1,000 but is fully refundable with no obligation
* Several customer have multiple configurations and slots on the list
* Severa; customers have speced out cars that are on constraint or have not been announced (Vert, 1LT, Yellow, etc)
* Probable that some customers are on multiple dealers lists
* Some will simply lose interest by the time you have to actually order and commit to the car
* Some won't be able to finance the car due to credit / income issues
* Some will eventually have to tell their wives and that will be the end of that
So, all that considered, and understanding this is just for discussion purposes and we don't really know, what percentage are actually going to turn in to cars that are delivered to the dealer from their current list?

Good post, and agreed on all counts. All the claims about first year being already sold out now can't be substantiated and likely aren't true. 2020 probably will be ultimately sold out at max factory capacity, but I suspect a lot of people, who've never been on any list at this point, will end up getting cars if they want them.

That is what I am thinking as well. Not that they won't sell out, I think they will, but the 25% or so that don't actually get custom ordered for customers the dealer will use for store inventory.

On the subject of selling out, "sold "means cars actually delivered to customers. GM uses the term "sold orders," but even those aren't actually "sold" because people do refuse delivery after custom ordering and putting down deposits. I suspect many dealers will happily keep the deposits if allowed by state law in their location, some may even return the deposit, and put them into dealer stock. Some states (e.g. CA and others) mandate full refunds if delivery is refused, making it very easy to walk away at delivery time.
I agree that 2020 will almost certainly sell out easily, but I think many not currently on a list will end up getting a car.

Percentage that takes delivery
I estimate that about a third will drop out for various reasons. First, it’s easy to put a grand down on a 60k Vette but in all reality when it’s time to pay the piper it’s really north of 80k.
I think the dealers will not let everyone on the list “move up” either. They will take that slot opportunity to order one for the dealership. These will be the ones with the ADM’s.
A lot of dealers will offer msrp but will have vettes available from these slots with their markup.
Just my opinion.

My wife and I have an understanding about vehicles that goes back to 1985 when we started dating....she has NO veto power. I gladly accept her input, but cars are my domain.

I think you can add these to your list as well ...
* Some will finally see and sit in the car and decide it's really not what they expected or wanted
* Some will grow impatient with the wait to get one and decide to get something else
* Some will drop off after realizing things they wanted on the car when they initially put their name on a dealer list (pre-reveal) just aren't going to be available (manual tranny, soft top, etc)

Current list or original list? I think this thing will be a completely dynamic thing changing sometimes by the day. As Foosh said, ultimately all of 2020 production will be sold, but not to the people that were on a dealer list back to who knows when. How far do we go back? Two years ago, one year, a week before reveal, or when? Again this thing will continue to evolve as people drop off someone will call in and ask if there are any available. Don't know where the starting line is, but if it's three days after reveal I would guess (and that's all it is) 75% will stick.

she looks, and I get the eye roll from her. "It's nice"...as she heads back into the house. She understands.
Some relationships on the other hand I suspect do not have the same situation. Whatever works for them.

Yeah, the claim often repeated here that the car is sold out is so much BS. Two dealers have called me asking if I am interested, this after talking to them in the spring and them saying I'd unlikely get a car in 2020.
That said, it will definitely sell out, especially since it will be a shorter year I think.

I was on the list for 6 months and last Wednesday was called by Les Stanford Chevrolet to make an official order, which I did. Rapid Blue with body colored top, 2Lt, and a couple of options.

My dealer in Canada said that some of the people on the list are expecting the GrandSport, Z06, and convertible models so unless they want the Stingray in 1, 2, or 3LT then its obvious those numbers will drop off. Plus add in the usual affordability issues with loans, etc. then I'm certain most will get the new car. One other factor bumping people up the queue will be how GM is releasing the colors and options on the car. Looks like those who want 1LT with or without Mag ride and Z51 will wait or so on...
Loads of queue jumping to be expected I presume...

Sold cars, as per GM, are cars delivered to their dealers. Period. Not sold any other way. Sold spin, is what some are attempting to foist here.

I would guess between 25 & 30% will drop off the pre release lists.
Have to agree with Joe on something, oh the humanity, a car is not sold till its delivered & accepted by the buyer.
