seriously? the 2020/2021's have that "feature" of killing the engine when stopped, then starting it when the brake is released? Is that what we are talking about here? can it be defeated, and I assume it does not engage in M mode, correct? Jeez, that's as bad as the 1st to 4th shift on the C5 (easily defeated though).

The C8 did not, but there were several GM trucks that had it and GM started leaving that feature out abruptly during the model year because it uses the chips everyone is talking about being in very limited supply.
The reason would be that start/stop can be turned off whereas AFM is hard to turn off all the time.
That's a reason for who, GM or the owners? I have a 2020 GM vehicle with start/stop and it sucks, my AFM is 100% invisible the only way I know it's doing its thing is the green light that says V4.

Agree... I would much rather have AFM over Auto Start/Stop any day.
I guess it depends on the car. I have start stop on the AMG and the wife's 450 and it is mostly seamless. I like the AFM on the Corvette because you are saving during cruise not just while stopped. Like Phil said, you only know AFM is operating if you look for the light
The spouse's Stinger has that annoying Start/Sop and I try to remember to press the disable button when I drive it. When it stops I always get the panicky feeling that the engine failed and I don't think I'll ever get used to it.
They stopped AFM in the full size trucks for a bit due to parts shortages.
Man... that's a great truck to have lol.
AFM is a complicated time bomb.. always has been and probably will be. Best to replace with non collapsible lifters and a non AFM cam. SomethiNg I suspect won't be possible in the new GMs with their encryption..

That was a concern when C7 came out, but those fears really never materialized.
Due to modern engineering and manufacturing advancements, a complicated modern engine is far more reliable than an old simple engine.

I got used to start stop pretty quick. Once you realize the engine didn’t actually stall at the red light, it’s just as easy to drive as anything else.
I think it’s more psychological than an actual driving impediment.
Anyone know if the 22 will have that annoying stop start thingy
Can't unless they have an electric water pump! Brakes and steering already are electric! One reason for eBrake!
The upcoming ERay (at some point when required by law) will have to have an electric water pump. In fact I think this may be all C8's at some point. Tadge and company had to plan on that as if you look at the date of the press release link below it was about the time of the start of the C8 design. They Ferrari, Porsche etc all planed to meet the required law! No choice.
This press Release Defines what was to be law starting in 2017 and ALL Sports Cars in 2025 would require ONLY ~40 mpg NOT the average for all cars as it notes 54.5 mpg! Yep stopped by a pen in January 2017. We have another pen now! https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov...iency-standard
If you like it use it. It will cost you more because you will use more battery's and starters.
Are you talking about start stop?
Not so. The starters and batteries are more robust for start stop and it only works when the engine is hot so they’re not doing the same work as needed for a cold start.
