Well, the E-Ray (name trademarked by GM) has just been introduced and (big collective gasp) it is not a Corvette. Elan Musk has done it again with his new roadster. My previous post generated more than a few negative posts concerning my depiction of the internal combustion engine as being obsolete, but the future has now arrived folks. An earlier post this morning goes over some of the prospective performance stats, and I find this numbers beyond astounding. Granted, there will be many problems, particularly when is comes to Musk overpromising and his production problems. But I find 0-60 in 1.9 seconds and a quarter mile in 8.8 seconds almost incomprehensible--and a torque of 7375 pounds(no, this is not a typo)! This makes the upcoming ZR1 look pretty paltry. I have the C7 and I love it, but I am beginning to feel conflicted. I feel that GM as it relates to the Corvette has become a "Me to" company. Mid engine automobiles have been around for decades and the car is still a year away from production. This new roadster leap-frogs cars like the anticipated mid engine. To me it doesn't matter whether it comes with a DOHC engine with a Tremec dual clutch. A previous poster said that my depiction of the internal combustion as being obsolete and a dinosaur was not accurate and that the engine was still around. Really?
Granted, there will be improvements, but the internal combustion engine is ancient technology has basically reached the end, and the big research money is going electric. I think the mid-engine C8 if it comes out as such will be obsolete the day it comes out. Now let the naysayers begin.
C8 will look good when when people find out Musks car will be 200k and up. I dont know if I buy all the states and the 400 mile range. a coupe of 0-60 @ 1.9 I'm sure will knock it down 200 miles. haha
The future is here ! Let’s just be happy someone is Around to push the envelope like Mr Musk is doing.
Even if Telsa fails he will have changed automotive history by forceing the other automakers hand on making fast good looking eletric vehicles.
The roadster makes me lust for it
The zr1 is nice and a cool car I wouldn’t mind owning for 45k someday maybe ....... probably not though
This is coming from a c7 owner purchased band new in 2014
Even Tesla's "surprise reveal" of their Roadster was totally awesome. The reaction from those in attendance was just as intense and impressive as the car's performance specs. I must say, it made the C7 ZR1 reveal pale in comparison.

How good will the C8 look when the price is somewhere north of $150,000?
Frank--I have to respectfully disagree when you say the post is "veering off the C8 focus a bit." The focus as absolutely on the C8. Between the many photos and leaked information we have a pretty good idea what the car is going to be like and what it is going to offer. But when it does come out will it even be relevant? That is the point I have been trying to make. Every so often something comes along that completely upsets the status quo. Look at Steve Jobs and the cell phone and how fast and how completely it changed communication across the globe; it happened almost overnight. This is what is now happening to the automobile industry. This new Tesla is a major, stupendous leapfrog over anything the C8 might offer. The C8 will most likely offer a DOHC with a dual clutch transmission, etc. None of this technology is new. It has been around for decades. GM is late to the game, and when it finally does join the game will be over. It may not be Musk, and it may not be Tesla, but this new car shows the technology is there. The normal development and production cycle has been upended when a car like this comes out.
If Musk does not succeed with this car someone else will; the technology is there. As I said previously, and as the video shows this thing is incredible, and it makes the ZR1 looks like a slug. The C8? Yesterday's technology!
pretty sure 90% of the consensus on the forum is that the C8 will start at 65-70K.
agreed.. I find it hard to believe that the one left over surprise( thats been pictured all over) will be 150K. from 55K stingray to $150K car.. not buying it. that would be the death for GM.. sort of
Crazy, but that is the ugliest steering wheel ever. I would not want a 200K car that I had to go to the aftermarket for a proper wheel.
The C8 may be old tech, but remember that GM is pretty savvy when it come to electric power...go back to the beginning of Saturn and look at what they had accomplished then. C8 may have a bit of electric in the format... Thus the car and it's tech may not be that antiquated.
Until Tesla can prove they can build anything in quantity with fit and finish better than a mid-90's Hyundai, I'll reserve judgement.
I'm excited about the future of electric performance vehicles, but not so sure of how much Tesla will actually participate in the game. I wish them well.

Our money will be much better spent when Cadillac, BMW and Audi get their electrics on the road.
