I guess they could have done nothing but the competition upped the horsepower so it has to at least keep up with Ford and Dodge. GM's budget went towards the DOHC engine, very business like approach.
At 490, the LT2 will be the highest HP of the N/A engines from Ford (480) and Dodge (485) so GM's bragging rights are intact. For those who love N/A engines, these are the best of times.

ah, no. c6 z06, 427 vert and zr1 all eclipsed 500. insurance was relatively cheap, where many paid well under 1000 annually.

Now whether he's a GM plant or not, I dont care, I love the gossip, I love the inside info - even if it doesnt turn out to be true, it's all so much fun to talk about. I much prefer Zer02's approach to Zora_Vette's 100% negativity - the ole' macho-internet-bully BS gets old real quick.

Back to the thread:

Only 490 HP? Now I'm getting sad. GM has to keep up with at least the GT350 (535 HP) - just doesn't make any sense. While I haven't been a fan of test mules, the newer C8s in camo are looking better, and if the rear quarter isn't so hideous and it has over 500 HP, I'll be trading my GS on one pretty quick.
Keep in mind how GM always does things: slow, medium, fast. $, $$, $$$. So I think the base model c8 will be under 500 HP. Not to say that they won't bump up the HP in a couple of years, a la 2007 too 2008 transition from LS2 to LS3.

I think 490 HP on the base model is a reasonable guess, and maybe this plate number is a coincidence and has nothing to do with it. GM has probably not finalized the SAE numbers on it yet, maybe 490 is a target. Who knows. 7/18/2019.

If you buy a Z06 or ZR1 and drive 90% on public roads, you don't need the extra HP. So you are paying for insurance that is doing nothing. If you drive on the track, the insurance doesn't cover you. So again, paying for nothing.

I think the C8 team is shooting for a higher benchmark than the specific output of outclassed muscle cars and their V8's. I believe they are shooting for a mid-engine competitor's output, perhaps the McLaren 540C, at 533 hp. I also think they're targeting the 911 Turbo's 540 hp. I don't know about the supposed Easter Egg License Plate. Could be part of the deception as well. Maybe it is the torque spec, albeit at a higher peak rpm than the LT1 (7000 rpm).

Yes, I think there will be two engines very soon. First the LT2 at 490hp will be the launch engine at $70K. Then the LT4 will follow in a car that is well into 6 figures and faster than a ZR1 on the track and strip.
Mary Barra said that the "iconic" Z06 paves the way for the C8 and her meaning was clear.

This ^, what GM did a decade and a half ago with the LS7 is still a more attractive engine that the LT2 with DI but no port injection to clean the valves and VVT lifters. It's a heavier engine than the LS7, less powerful, with less character, idle chatter from the DI injectors and clogged valves down the road.

In addition to all of that you neglect the flat plane crank Ford V8, which is again a very desirable engine, move powerful, na. The only bragging rights are for C8 owners vs. C7 owners, diminutive bragging rights. Do you really see a LT2 owner who used to own an LT1 getting that excited to take the checkbook out again over a small displacement bump?

There is absolutely no indication or hint that they will use the LT4 in the C8. Wrong once again, but hey, what else is new?

Under 1000 annually!? You guys are getting the deals. Maybe after my 25th bday coming up I'll get the geezer rates too on my Z

Anyway, regarding the thread, I'm in the 550hp or bust boat too. Even if it means pricier insurance

If the LT2 comes in at 490 HP, that will be 30 more than the LT1 with NPP exhaust at 460 hp (or 35 more than the base LT1's 455 hp, or if NPP continues to add 5 or 6 hp on C8, then 495 vs 460). The LT1 has 19 to 30 hp over the LS3 from the base C6 (460 or 455 vs 436 or 430).

So with LT2 at 490 HP the base engine gain from C7 to C8 would be consistent, and even more than, C6 to C7 (which was also a point of contention when C7 was launched of course).

Obviously I'd love to see them break 500 or even outclsss the Ford vodoo hp, but I think 490 is a reasonable expectation for us to have at this point.

I purchased the SAE paper that came out before the LT1 was officially announced, and my recollection is that it showed a dyno going up to 7000 rpm and 475 hp, but we ended up with 455 hp and 6600 redline with AFM lifters. I don't have access to the computer where I saved it right now to check the memory, but one interesting thing of note was it was referred to as "high output". At the time there was discussion of of that meant the LT1 was the high output engine relative to the gen V truck engines, or if there was a high output version of the LT1. If it was the latter, then that engine apparently never made it to production.

Fast forward to the C8 launch, and the leaked order guide shows LT2 "high output". Very interesting. I wonder what clues if any that paper may hold to what we get from the LT2, or if GM has released any more SAE papers that might. This paper was for the gen V in general though, so if LT2 is still gen V, there's probably not another paper on it.

You are correct that the GT350 has more HP apparently, but a lowly Stingray is faster 0-60 according to C&D so what is the point? Corvette still has the bragging rights and the C8 will be even faster.
Anyway, the GT350 is history next year when the GT500 debuts with its supercharged 700 hp.

Well obviously the LT2 is not enough engine and there is no turbo Corvette motor available, so what are you going to use to go fast?

I am actually shocked you weren't banned after your pathetic attempts of fooling this Forum.
I am normally a pretty easy going guy, but your crap a few months ago was simply inexcusable and totally pissed off this section of the Forum.
