Trying to figure out why GM didn’t use a joy stick design shifter that at least looks sporty and is used in the XT5. What the C8 has looks to be almost straight out of a Honda Odyssey.

If you compare the two side by side you will see the C8 is much better looking. It's the same idea, sure, but that doesn't make it a minivan. Many manufacturers today, including high end ones, are using the same approach. As to "why?" Well, because they didn't ask your opinion. When it comes to design decisions, they gnaw them to death and ultimately lock in one the designers can live with that they think works with the overall design of the interior.

Old people-ish..... That's why they didn't use the shifter out of the old people-ish car. Why have a thing that sticks up when it isn't necessary and is just producing electrical signals any way?
I'll see your mini van and raise you 3 super cars....

so your saying a manual shifter is for old people because it sticks up?
Less clutter in the center console is the primary reason. Its the reason why you see push buttons instead of a lever in any car, not just a minivan. A lot of modern cars, supercars included, are going to this because it removes clutter in the console allowing better visibility of everything else in the general area such as *****, dials or the screen and improves the layout. I like having a physical lever as much as anyone but in certain cars it would look pretty bad, the C8 is one of them. It would ruin the entire center console, you wouldn't be able to access anything.
Want to see a terrible implementation of a gear lever? look at the new 992 911 PDK. The gear select looks like the head of an electric razor and its incredibly small. I'd take drive mode select buttons over that lever any day.

It certainly is old fashioned by comparison. Maybe they were trying to current and if it's good enough for real super cars wouldn't that be viewed as being in the game.

My 2013 Volt has an old style automatic shift lever. I never could figure out why they did that, it’s absolutely unnecessary and does clutter up the center console and get in the way. Ancestor worship I guess. Too many radical changes in a Volt already. People really don’t take change very well, as evidenced by a lot of threads here in the C8 section of the forum. IMO the C8 shifter looks great and is minimalist in its execution.

No. I think what we are saying is that if it's good enough for Ferrari and other super cars as depicted, it's good enough for the C8. And your comparison to a minivan is invalid. Pick on something else to pick on.

Just because Ferrari has it doesn’t make it right.
