Engine cover
Are there pictures of the engine without the cover ?

Yes... floating around somewhere. It's an ugly ribbed intake manifold like the LT1. You can see the ribs at the top of this picture.

Also the cover acts as a noise barrier. It even has foam to absorb noise on the underside.
