Default Optional wheels question

If you order the $2700 wheels you also get the standard wheels correct? Do they come with tires as well or just the rims in a box? If you're doing museum delivery I guess you need a vehicle big enough to bring them home or do they ship them? I'm getting the z51 so I will have summer rubber and since I'm picking it up at the end of the year I would like to have all season tires on it? What's the best way to handle this? Buy aftermarket wheels and tires bring them with me and swap out tires in the parking lot?

I'm going with the standard wheels (free ones) on my order and then going with aftermarket wheels that have a little less offset on them to bring the wheels a bit closer to the fender. Then I'll have two sets - one for track day and one set for cruisin.

The summer tires won't explode or throw you off the road in cool conditions.. I wouldn't drive with snow on the ground, but other than that, just drive the car home and then deal with it.

My Z51 delivered in March in Ontario was regularly driven in 0 C temps. Nothing terrible happened.

The option wheels can be ordered through a dealer. Why not do it that way? Option or after-market are going to need a set of TPMS sensors if you intend to run 2 sets of wheels.

Unless the car is a daily driver I personally would not bother with A/S at all in your location.

Funny I was going to buy a set of rims and tires already mounted and balanced and swap them. I guess as long as it is no snowing I will be ok I have a 500 mile break in anyway

Seems the best way to go if you are asking for opinions is go with the standard rims that are come with the car and then buy a set of after market rims of your choosing later on.

most people want the aftermarket rims a little wider and with an offset that brings the wheel closer to the outer edge of the fender...

i think so far I saw a few sets of hybrid rims from vossen for about 2600 dollars and that might be where I eventually land.

you could do 19/20 s in slightly different offsets and get slightly larger rubber on the wheels which could help handling. PErsonally I think ill do that.

if I can mount stock rubber on them safely ill do it early. If I cant Ill go probably a year and a half or so as I daily my corvettes to the tune of about 12k a year.

Ive been driving various generation corvettes year round for decades. Im not afraid of the z51 higher performance tires in winter weather as these are NOT cup2 tires.

itll be fine as long as the snow isnt more than a few inches. We usually get 100 inches of snow each winter but last winter here was nothing but one light storm.

once I buy aftermarket rims or a set of take offs at a great discount as there will be a ton of them available on craigslist or these forums...ill pony up a set of dedicated snow tires for my standard rims gm ships with the car..

this plan has worked for me for many, many years.

id recommend this to anyone asking for a plan of action ..

check out the vossen wheels ..right now Id suggest they are a better value and a better looking larger wheel than the gm slightly over priced oem offerings.

good luck and take your time.

the z51 tires are as I said not cup2 tires...they are more balanced and can easily be used year round except for deep snow etc...

anybody with common sense knows how to drive with lateral cornering capability of .73 in wintery conditions worst case scenerio.

back in the 1960s and 1970s that was close to the maximum adhesion capability of standard vehicles like pony cars etc...and we all made a ton of hp back then too..

no abs brakes, no traction control either.

we used to just be more sensitive to handling limits even with extremely low adhesion capability compared to todays technology.

be conserative in expectations of the p4s z51 tire in the winter until you get a dedecated snow winter tire wheel setup on the stock rims and in my opinion youll be just fine.

all seasons are in my opinion a waste...

two sets of wheels and tires, one being the stock free set with winter tires and the other being higher performance summer tires is pretty much free other than the extra set of wheels and sensors..

you basically are just extending the life of your summer tires during the months of december , january, fevruary and march by using dedicated winter snow tires in those months.

btw I dont bother with runflats when replacing tires myself.

i prefer the lower unsprung weight and slightly less cost of non runflats.

@jerri talks about the preference for winter tires rather than A/S and I agree. That's the setup I have with my Golf R. There are excellent winter tires around that run just as smooth and quiet.

The swapover point occurs at 6 deg C or 43 deg F. So winter tires are better when you have sustained temps below that where summer tires lose flexibility and some grip. But as I said before - still quite useable.
