2021 VIN Decoder

This is an example of a VIN # for a 2021 Corvette Coupe (3LT):

1G1YC2D45M5109199

There are 17 characters. Starting with first character on left the codes are:

01. "1"= Built in US
02. "G"= General Motors
03. "1"= Chevrolet
04. Denotes the car line: Corvette is a "Y" body.
05. Trim level:
.. A=1LT
.. B=2LT
.. C=3LT
.. 9=export (Non US, Non Canada)
06. Body style: "2" = Coupe, "3" = Convertible (HTC)
07. Restraint code: D – AJ7 Active Manual Belts, Airbags – Driver & Passenger and Seat Side
08. Engine: LT2 = "4"
09. Check Digit – 0 to 9 or X
10. Model year: M (2021)
11. Plant: Bowling Green = "5"
12-17. Production sequence number that starts with the #100001 for each model yr.

000001 = captured test fleet cars
100001 = regular production

The check digit can be 0-9 or 'X'.

An overview of the process for calculating a VIN's check digit is as follows:

Remove all of the letters from the VIN by transliterating them with their numeric counterparts. Numerical counterparts can be found in the table below.
Multiply this new number, the yield of the transliteration, with the assigned weight. Weights can be found in the table below.
Sum the resulting products.
Modulus the sum of the products by 11, to find the divisor.
If the divisor is 10 replace it with X.

Transliterating the numbers

Transliteration consists of removing all of letters and substituting them with their appropriate numerical counterparts. These numerical alternatives can be found in the following chart. I, O and Q are not allowed, and can not exist in a valid VIN; for the purpose of this chart, they have been filled in with N/A (not applicable). Numerical digits use their own values.

A: 1 B: 2 C: 3 D: 4 E: 5 F: 6 G: 7 H: 8 N/A J: 1 K: 2 L: 3 M: 4 N: 5 N/A P: 7 N/A R: 9
S: 2 T: 3 U: 4 V: 5 W: 6 X: 7 Y: 8 Z: 9
S is 2, and not 1. There is no left-alignment linearity.

Weights used in calculation

The following is the weight factor for each position in the VIN. The 9th position is that of the check digit. It has been substituted with a 0, which will cancel it out in the multiplication step.

Once my order went to Status Code 3400 and I was able to get the last 8 digits of my VIN from MacMulkin's website, I used the information on this page to calculate the entire VIN of my C8 -- including the Check Digit -- and it worked perfectly, as confirmed later by multiple sources.

There are a number of internet VIN decoders. Some are "better" than others. I'll leave generating check digits to others, but very interesting @Zymurgy for providing the how it is generated. Never knew the algorithm. All that said, once you actually receive your entire VIN, it's much simpler to use one of the many VIN decoders to break down the meaning of each digit.

Once my order went to status Code 3400 and i used to be able to get the remaining 8 digits of my VIN from MacMulkin's website, I used the records in this page to calculate the complete VIN of my C8 -- which include the test Digit -- and it worked flawlessly, as confirmed later by way of multiple resources.
